Calgary not selling their veterans at inflated prices because they are in a playoff spot.
It's really that simple.
Coleman would be a perfect player for TB to get.

No doubt. I just think the return by Seattle is startling. Coleman/Frost likely warrants a better package, depending on retention. I like both, but would be tempted by 2 1sts, a 2nd +

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

You’re not alone, but being reckless with 1sts and overpaying for the exact players they want is the TB special. It’s what they do. Sometimes it pays off (Goodrow), sometimes it really doesn’t (Jeannot).

Which other trades had inflated prices? This looks like JB wanted two guys and overpaid to make sure he got them. No different from the Jeannot trade. We wouldn't even know if JB would give up the same assets for any of our vets.

Yeah, you are right but it does seem like GMs feel this could be anyone’s year and therefore a seller’s market. Not TB specifically, but it feels like offers for some of our older vets could be the best they’ll ever be right now (Kadri, Coleman).

Kadri's large continuing cap him makes him a poor deadline deal for cap strapped teams.

It's easy for him to say. This entire time his team has featured a generational blueliner (Hedman) and a generational goalie (Vas). Teams that don't have those pieces don't have the luxury of spending futures lavishly to get playoff results.

Tampa has made 4 1st round picks since 2016.
Brett Howden - part of the Miller/McDonagh trade
Cal Foote - went in the Jeannot trade
Nolan Foote - went in the Coleman trade
Isaac Howard - still with the organization.

Yeah. It’s easier for teams like Tampa, Florida and Vegas. They are destinations that UFAs prefer, they have loads of good players that they can just keep adding to because they don’t need the draft as much. If every 2-3 years they have UFAs lining up to play there, they don’t need 1st round picks as much as other teams.
I think age will catch up with these teams eventually but they are firmly in their win now windows so trading 1sts for impact players is worth it.

Puckpedia shows the Lightning with 9 million in space next year. They need to re-sign or replace Gourde, Glendening, Perbix, and Johansson. Considering the fact they seem to find cheap capable replacements (Eyssimont, Darren Raddysh, Lilleberg, Girgensons, Chaffe), that doesn't seem too hard.

Still a stupid comment overall though. You can have a good team full of good players and also have a lot of draft picks in your arsenal.
