If he really is playing through an injury (and can hardly shoot iirc) I would expect him to be shutdown for the season soon.

The players and locker room are significantly different than when Rhett played.
Players all coming into camp in shape for one.

Also, a pass by who? Does it really matter if fans "give him a pass"? Or if the media's not harping about him? If the coaching staff is knowingly playing him while he's injured and continues to put him out there when he can't compete physically, that's another matter entirely.
But fan passes and fan & media chatter and fan & media criticism don't matter for anything at all, last time I checked.

Is that all what a captain should be? A good locker room guy? Your team gets their poop kicked in in Florida, so the captain fires up the team to produce 1 shot on goal in the following game in the entire first period. The only reason why the Flames even scored that game was on an expiring 5 on 3 PP.

He is what he is, getting a C on his jersey wasn't going to make him a different player who hits people and fights.
He didn't make himself captain.

You’re right. The Flames aren’t scoring because the captain isn’t telling them to score.
Why hasn’t Backlund thought of that?

Backlund will be 37 in two weeks, 37 years old. Expecting him to suddenly raise his game is so f'n stupid. Rhett Warrener was six years retired at 37. Backlund isn't a young star player captain, like change expectations.

I don't expect that. I expect him as captain to get his teammates to elevate their games via motivation. So many players on the team are having career lows.

I’m not thrilled when I see Backlund on the powerplay, but that isn’t his fault. He’s exactly what he’s supposed to be: an older defensive centreman. Any points on the board are a bonus.

Yeah, Backlund! Just change the "Motivate teammates" switch from Off to On! It's not complicated!

Which players ? We have got the best version of Huberdeau we have seen. Kadri is right at his career average. The same with Coleman.
This team was supposed to be a bottom 10 team maybe worse. They have exceed all expectations because of our working teams and having a goalie emerge as a star.
The team wasn’t supposed to score much. Maybe not to this extent but that’s more to do with them trying to play low event hockey to win games due to the lack of talent.

Watch him. Watch him “try” and tell me with a straight face he’s giving his all out there.
Backlund is controller disconnected.

I don't see lazy play at all. How are you measuring that?

If players can’t motivate themselves maybe they are the problem.

Seems pretty crazy that some teams ever go without a captain, or don’t change their captain immediately after a disappointing season.
|
Personally I think the only reason why he has the C is because he expressed a desire to leave the team prior to last seasons start in a way to coax him into staying longer. Not because of leadership qualities. And sure, maybe he is a nice guy in the locker room. He is also a great community guy, so I will give him that too.

“Bad” and shouldn’t be captain aren’t the same though .
