Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has appointed a former judge to investigate whether the province’s procurement decisions around health were consistent with the government’s policy objectives, after The Globe and Mail first reported allegations of political interference last month.

Ms. Smith, in a ministerial order published Monday, named Raymond Wyant, a former chief judge of the Provincial Court of Manitoba, as the independent investigator.#

Nenshi responded

The #CorruptCare scandal deserves a full public inquiry. This isn’t one. Instead of an ethical, competent government, the Premier commissioned this report that will cost Albertans more than $625,000 and designed it to give herself cover from serious allegations.

It's always fun when their corruption wasting taxpayer dollars requires more taxpayer dollars to get to the bottom of it. If found guilty, there should be a way to bill the party for these costs, and if they go bankrupt, it means the system works wonderfully.

Im not super informed on this - whats the major difference between what Smith did and a public inquiry?

Outside of investigating the government's policy objectives and not, you know, the whole alleged corruption in the system.

As I understand it the big one is no subpeona power to get testimony from those involved. So really just relying on what the govt gives him.

I don't doubt they will get to a public inquiry at some point and this just buys them some time. We saw the same thing with the federal investigation run by Johnston as Special Rapporteur whose conclusion was that a public inquiry was not required but in the end that went ahead anyways.

Also, the terms of reference outline that the focus of the entire investigation is to be into AHS. Not the UCP. This report will find that there's no wrongdoing, because the mandate isn't to look into the UCP.

Other provinces already taking action - MB pulling US alcohol off the shelves, Ford being Captain Canada as expected, etc...

Can't wait to see the non-actions that we will slowly take in Alberta.

So how'd that work out last night? And, wait, it was a "flash mob" at a ranch? Do they even understand the point of a flash mob? I'm sure those cows had their minds changed.

I’m told over 100? Someone told us there were more than expected and more than two (?) times as before.

Other news from last week:

Lethbridge City Council continues stance on protection of clean water

https://www.lethbridge.ca/news/posts...m_medium=email

Quote:
City Council has consistently taken a stance against coal mines, acknowledging how important the agriculture and agri-food sectors are to the economies of the city and region, says Councillor Belinda Crowson, whose Official Business Motion was carried on Tuesday.

Even though Council has passed several motions on the matter, based on the many inquiries recently received she saw it as an opportunity to reaffirm council’s stance publicly once again.

“Lethbridge and surrounding communities are downstream from the proposed mining site and these proposed projects have the potential of affecting the water in the entire Oldman Watershed,” says Crowson. “There is, at present, little scientific information on how to address selenium at the water treatment level.
Major irrigation systems in southern Alberta obtain their water from the Oldman Watershed and southern Alberta’s economy and jobs may be impacted long-term if water quality issues affect the quality of our irrigation water and the reputation of our agri-food processing hubs.”

These tax cuts just keep getting better.

Quote:
The province says the flat rate for wine is going up another 15 cents per 750 ml bottle.

And it's creating a new ad valorem, or "value added" fee, that will go up as the price of wine goes up, on top of the flat fee.

For example, according to the province, a $25 750 ml bottle of wine will cost another 20 to 40 cents, but a $50 750 ml bottle of wine will cost anywhere from $2.80 to $3.25 more.

These changes came as a surprise to some Calgary wine merchants who say they worry about customer backlash.

When you are responsible for reducing the standard of living for the people of the province, you are supposed to increase access to creature comforts, so that the population doesn't rebel.

These guys can't do anything right.
