He thinks that Florida is that much closer to us than Mexico. Logistics-wise, it’s not going to break us to get more produce from South America than Florida or California.

Part of what makes this whole thing so frustrating is that in another universe Trump is properly rotting in prison for crimes he orchestrated on January 6 and various other felonies.

In another universe, Bernie Sanders was elected President in 2016. Just imagine how much better the world would be right now.

This whole thing has made me wonder what kinds of threats America has given to third world countries privately throughout recent history.

50% of me thinks this is just another one of his "pressure" tactics and the tariffs will delayed again at like 11:59pm.

Then the other 50% of me thinks he's an absolute moron and will go through with it.

Which part of me is right??

Don't hold your breath. I honestly feel that we've already crossed the threshold into an autocracy, with plenty of time left to chip away at what remains. The next election, if there is one, may be a Putin-esque sham.

Like ####ing come on. You deserve all the economic hardships coming your way.
They really do have some of the dumbest and least aware people anywhere. It's astonishing sometimes.

I'm in California right now dealing with some stuff at a family member's place and an elderly woman came up to me at a park when she saw my BC plates and told me how much she loves Canadians and that we shouldn't let them tear us apart. My first thought was "oh, that's nice; at least some people are aware what's going on". Of course the next thing out of her mouth was that she's a Trump voter and then without a hint of irony she was back to talking about how we need to stick together. I was polite enough, but seriously?

Oh, it most certainly is affected by his exit. He's their poster boy and his ability to work the media and spew nonsense is what MAGA rallies around.

No one in that circus ring has nearly the toxic charisma as him and won't be able to fill those shoes to keep solidarity among his base.

Vance doesn't know how to lead, either. He's a charisma black hole. He'll be eaten alive over time without dear leader.

Other problems will present in such a situation, including their government being potentially vulnerable, but it won't be nearly as aggressive as under Trump.

No, "external product" means stuff produced abroad. He's saying that stuff from outside the US will be tariffed so they should get ready to produce more for US customers to replace the foreign goods.

Which of course ignores the fact that retaliatory tariffs exist and US producers will no longer be able to earn as much through exporting their goods. There's reason they had to bail out farmers to the tune of $30B after his 2018 tariffs on China led to US agricultural exports to China dropping by 75%.

Have to let his dense ass figure it out. It's the only way that he learns why tariffs, trade wars and alienating the US is the worst idea in the history of bad ideas.

He has to see the consequences first hand.

They think the way Trump thinks, that the less powerful should capitulate to the will of bigger powers. There are Americans who in their minds, they love Canada and think Trump's desire to annex Canada is generous and a symbol of that love. They are actually dumbfounded that Canadians do not want it and aren't showing more gratitude at the offer. They actually believe that we are suffering up here.

I've had discussions with Americans who believe that the reason why most Canadians live with a few hundred kilometers of the U.S. border is because we want to be in the U.S., with no understanding to how latitude affects climate and carrying capacity. They believe that Canadians were "left behind" when the U.S. formed and the border was established, and they somehow did us wrong by letting that happen.
