They did though. They had Morgan Freeman come out and talk just about him

I thought Morgan Freeman coming out and opening the segment focusing on Hackman was great, they played more than a few clips as well.

Anora was a super fun movie, felt a bit like rip off of Nobody (odenkirk). Mikey madison has that good look but with depth and quirk that can melt you. Who’s the ###### who said I was weird for thinking Margaret qualley was hot. Great movie but didn’t think that would be the best. Whatever.

I know Hackman had a bigger and more accomplished career, but it was odd to not include Tony Todd or Michelle Trachtenberg in the "In Memoriam" section.
Shannon Doherty and Olivia Hussey also didn't make the cut.

One coud argue that Trachtenberg and Doherty are tv stars, Doherty was honored at the 2024 Emmys.
Olivia Hussey and Tony Todd are egregious omissions and but biggest omission was Alain Delon!

I felt real bad for that one guy in the group of three who won late... they clearly timed it out, each guy taking about 20 seconds, and then the third guy gets cut off.
I bet it's a nightmare task. You give the nominees the rules, then someone gets up there and their brain goes to scrambled eggs and they use up all the time blathering. I get it.
But it seems more often than not there's somebody that plays by the rules and gets screwed over. Every year they give the best actor 5 minutes to talk about agriculture or some damn thing but the sound editor who's just reached his life's apex can't say hi to his kids.

That sound editor just needs to slap someone and he'll get all the stage time he wants!
"Hi Kids!!" *SLAP*

I'm guessing everyone who voted for Anora just didn't have time to watch Sonic the Hedgehog 3, then.
But really, we're back to the continuing problem of the Oscars is that nobody has seen any of the movies that win the major awards. Oppenheimer was a good break from that last year at least.

I don’t care about who won so I only watched Conan’s opening. It was pretty good until he started singing. I turned it off then.

Just another reminder that Hollywood is about the most ferociously hierarchical industry in the world. Not just in the enormous disparity in what people are paid, but in how they’re treated. The difference between how a grip and an A-lister in a major studio film are treated is far wider than the difference in how Janice in accounts payable and the CEO of Enbridge are treated. The Hollywood system is set up to cater to the narcissism and egos of those at the very top.

Besides being a poor analogy, that’s not really true. The grip is at least part of a strong union and probably has good health coverage and mandated breaks. Janice is gonna get laid off because the enbridge ceo wants to raise their stock price and she’s first on the chopping block since she took mat leave last year.
Also the grip isn’t getting anywhere near the stage at the Oscars so I’m not sure how it’s in any way relevant. Well maybe when they set up the stage for the Oscars.
I’d rather cater to artistic people’s egos than to the the capitalist pigs that run most Fortune 500 companies. No actor has ever poisoned my water supply or given me cancer.

As someone who has worked as both "Janice at accounts payable" and as basically any job that exists on a film set, I can say it's absolutely no different. CEOs are giving their top sales people and VPs stupid meaningless awards all the time. The only difference is we don't point cameras at it.

Are you saying that no jet setting, elite, A-lister has impacted and poisoned the environment? Somehow everything they do in Hollywood to create blockbusters is "green"?

I thought Anora was great and Madison deserved the win.
I liked substance a lot, but didnt find Demi Moore's character to be that memorable. Perhaps people are wanting to see her win as a sort of life time achievement award ala Jamie Lee Curtis' win?

Janice is going to get a huge severance otherwise she's going to get an even bigger settlement when her case hits the courts.
My wife's severance was almost 90K, and she worked PT for most of her career at certain O&G company. And she didn't really make a lot since she was a lowly chemical lab tech.

It was a good movie. The acting was excellent. I would give it 8/10.
I don't really understand how it won so many awards though? I preferred A Complete Unknown in every category (I haven't seen Substance or Brutalist yet, but plan to shortly).
I saw the best actress thanking sex workers. I am operating under the impression that most women don't choose sex work unless they have to or are coerced to, so that felt misplaced to me. Perhaps times have changed? I wouldn't want my daughter or sister seeing tacit endorsement of it as a way to make money. To be clear - I'm speaking about the actress's speech rather than the movie itself (fiction, just like My Fair Lady, Hustle and Flow, Pretty Woman etc). Casino and Goodfellas were great gangster films, but nobody is getting on stage and thanking mobsters.
Anyway - end of day - Anora is well worth your time.

I know a couple girls who worked as strippers here for a few years. In a bad year they would make 90k a year and in a good year around 120k. They are both out of the industry now and said it was extremely toxic but the amount of money they were making at the time was made it worth it for them.

While coercive sex work happens, as does survival sex work, a large majority of sex work is consensual. The same as you are decided that we're going work retail etc. The anti trafficking work has done a lot to create a narrative that all sex workers are trafficked and forced into sex work, and frankly that's not the case at all.
