The area is kind of getting ruined quickly there with the traffic and the density. It's a residential area with a little shopping strip but they are developing it like it's some downtown, big city area with a lot of jobs locally. People need to get out of that area for work and other lifestyle activities by either car or transit and those options aren't good now let alone with thousands more people.

I still get how people vote for Sean Chu. Every Sean Chu voter deserves measles.

Marda Loop is awesome. If you want quiet suburbs where you have to drive every time you have to do anything there are lots of communities elsewhere in the city.

By ruined you mean transformed into the inner city area you are talking about.

Who said that? It’s just crazy amounts of folks jammed and is unusual in this city. I like the little tiny restaurants. Those are awesome and have been needed. I just hope the city does the math right and not just beholden to those snakes that are RNDSQR. There’s a lot of snake oil people but they don’t hold a candle to developers.

It's an inner city area for sure but there is really not a lot of jobs. It's a residential area with a small commercial strip. This isn't 4 Street Mission.
I am not opposed to development but what is kinda happening there is the developers are running wild with the city backing. The access for the area's main streets is 33rd Ave and 14 Street. During rush hour, even on transit, it's taking a long time to get out of the area. If you don't work in the area, you don't have the option of not coming and going.
The real purpose of density and proper development is for people to be able to live, work, shop, entertain and more.
It's one of the reasons why Calgary has been focused on density for the downtown core. The jobs are there but historically there was not a lot of places for people to live downtown.
If the city is just exasperating a scenario where we are piling people into an area with poor access and not really any sort of employment outside of some service jobs, that isn't proper planning.
If your a business with a decent level of employee's and looking for commercial space, your not finding anything in Marda Loop. It doesn't really exist.

I actually just went through Marda Loop yesterday for the first time in a while (after working nearby for years, pre-Covid).
I thought it was coming along nicely. Lots of people out enjoying the day, many businesses seemed to be busy. Particularly on 34th Avenue. I was impressed at the number of restaurants and cafes along there.
Having frequented the area regularly for years but not as much recently, I prefer the “new” Marda Loop and will make a point of getting back there more.

Lots of the residential is being built with street face commercial on the bottom floors. They have done / are doing a tonne of road work to improve the access issues. There is high demand for the neighbourhood.
Outside of commuting to downtown which transit access is quite good for you can easily go car less there. It’s also a very short bike to downtown which is doable 75% of days. This is exactly the type of density we need to build. Adding commercial office space doesn’t really help as jobs a are more fungible than housing.

Ward 14 Councillor Peter Demong won't seek re-election.

Marda Loop lacks a good public transit connection. The vast majority of people in Marda Loop work downtown and are wealthy so they drive. Traffic their is an issue.
I would love to see a LRT/Tram connect Marda to 17th.

I don't blame them but yeah, aside from the mayor's seat it's going to be pretty much a brand new slate. And sure says something about the job that so many are opting out.
6/14 not returning if I've got my list correct? Demong, Mian, Penner, Spencer, Walcott, Pootmans

Many long time council members stepped down before the last election too. They knew that this was going to be an impossible term and the newbies felt that pain. Some (but not all) of the problem is coming from the provincial government undercutting the city of Calgary on major projects.

Calling some of those "quality" is a stretch though.

I suspect Carra will not run again too. Like Demong, he's been in office since 2010.
Assuming Chu isn't dumb enough to run again (although, he is very very dumb), that would push it to 8/14 not running again.
