Looks like Ontario going back to Ford. Terrible choice, but so was Crombie and Stiles clearly not getting her message across, either.

Crombie has lost. It will be interesting to see if she steps down as leader.

Terrible choice? This was absolute landslide victory. The big difference between him and the CPC situation is that Doug Ford despite favouring Trump months ago, did what he needed to do and fought against Trump and was the first premier to do real actions to fight back against the threat of tariffs. He's more or less always been a moderate Blue PC type, and this was what Ontario has chosen.

This could be Poilievre come election, but he's too stuck up on Trudeau -> Carbon Tax Carney and unable to pivot hard against Trump and far right socalism at a time when he has to.

Crombie lost her own seat.

She almost has to, I would think. How do you lose in a riding where you were the mayor?

And Doug Ford is a terrible choice because he's wasted scads of money on nonsense - and now he's talking about building a tunnel under the 401.

Doug Ford has plenty of his own scandals (greenbelt scandal for one, Ontario Place spagate), scandals aside, have the NDP or Liberals in Ontario stood out as real alternatives to Doug Ford? They ran absolutely horrendous campaigns and were nowhere close to ready for an election.

He may have been a terrible choice, but who provided a real alternative?

CBC commentary, specifically Barton, is just being weird and petty about it. 43% of the vote is quite high in a multi-party system and they are pretending like if Ford and the PC Party getting less seats than they hoped as some type of message or yellow light.

Which was exactly my point, so not sure why you felt the need to argue it.

I'm not arguing, I'm pretty much agreeing. He's just been less bad. Crombie and Stiles were terrible choices, could not make a case to be elected and were worse than Ford.

https://www.ipsos.com/en-ca/doug-for...dership-debate

Spoiler!

I mean...considering how Ford scored higher in protecting cultural, religious and minorities and someone who will get things done in the leadership debate, and best to manage Trump and economic times, seems he is not as terrible as the other choices. If the opposition can't make a dent while PC Party of Ontario has been in power for 7 years during very tough cost of living and inflation periods that has eaten many incumbent governments alive, that's not a messaging problem. That's a weak leadership / party problem.

A big conservative buffoon contrasting Trumps nonsense verbally might just be worth the slices of Ontario he’s going to take for himself and his friends.

Conservatives back in Ontario helps the federal liberals. The province loves to split their allegiances.

The ironic part of this is that, outside of the CBC, the entire Canadian media landscape is pretty much captured by the right.

This is what I was referencing. How are all those folks out there who feel like the world would stand up for us doing now? We are ALONE.
Starmer is so paranoid of Farage and Co., who are full-on Trump/Putin bootlickers, that he's not going to put his neck on the line for us.

Congrats to Rupert Murdoch for completely destroying facts and reason in both the UK and the US.

Clearly the hole Wynne's Liberals dug is going to take over a decade for that party to climb out of.

Yup, and I'd rather have it that way than the flip. Sorry Ontario, you are a sacrifice to the greater good.

Contrasting the above poll with the blowout re-election of Doug Ford as a Conservative in Ontario, it really hammers home that PP and the CPC couldn’t read the room if everyone tattooed it onto their foreheads; no response is a response, and their silence toward the orange menace in D.C. is deafening.

It just solidifies that the CPC/UCP/Reform brand of conservatism is so much aligned with MAGA when it comes to values and goals. So much so, he feels he is risking alienating his base by saying anything. As much as I am not a fan of Ford, he seems to be coming at it more from a classical PC centre-right approach - which makes much more sense for Ontario voters.

Can't help but wonder how well O'Toole would do in the current politicial climate. I feel like he'd likely be in the same conservative brand as Ford, and probably dropping some of the socially regressive garbage in the party to plot a path forward for Canada and against Trump.

As much as Conservatives were very desperate to blame centrists for not voting for O’Toole, he may exemplified have been the clearest warning sign and indictment of the party’s direction in recent history. A warning they have simply been idiots for not taking.

He was a right wing centrist in the leadership race and garnered a lot of good faith, pandered to the far right and lost the national election, and then stood up and told Conservatives exactly what was needed to win… and was booted for it. Today the Conservatives are heading into loss territory for the exact reason O’Toole lost, and the thing that would save them is the thing that got O’Toole stood for that got him booted.

Fools.
