"They're an impressive group. Obviously, they're having a great year. Is there a way to play against that? I mean, push back... I dunno... It was just not good."
-- McDavid explaining how hard it is to beat the Capitals
It's weird how this road trip is scheduled to have the Flames playing almost every opponent a day or two after the Oilers play them on their own road trip. Hopefully, they can continue going in and beating the team a couple nights after that team blew out the Oilers.
1 down. Next up, Tampa on Thursday.

This could be a fun road trip. Edm in free fall against some of the best teams in the league, just following them around after they make the teams comfortable, hopefully after a decisive win we catch TBL sleeping, and hopefully Florida and Carolina stomp the no d's

Great game by the Flames.
Among other stats, Calgary outhit Washington 27 - 20 and blocked 29 shots to the Cap's 15.
The only stats that the Capitals came out of top were FO% & PP% which are both commonly a Flame's weakness.
I had section 217 wondering WTF was happening during the anthems as I absolutely belted out O Canada tonight. I'm a dual citizen and constantly under attack these days as a Fed. It really felt great to let loose and just proudly sing O Canada for everyone to hear. I may have over emphasized true north strong and FREE, but it has to be made obvious for these folks.

Edit: maybe safer not to challenge, but a kicking motion was involved, even if the puck did not go in off the skate or skate blade.

Thats a kick
LAME

I don't trust Toronto or the review system
Quote:
dude that is a KICK. if you did that in soccer nobody would say "he didn't kick that in it just bounced off his leg while he was moving it toward the goal"

Was kicking motion imo … but not off the skate like B is saying

We cant challenge that?

What a lucky bounce, my god

Oh, good. The opposition has scored. The Caps dismemberment of them can now begin.

So they didn’t even let the Caps challenge it?

That’s a kicking motion get outta here
Quote:
we can't review that?
Quote:
Refs definitely impacting this game. Allowing the soccer goal, the no call on the McMichael trip while we were on the PP, and now the extra penalty for Wilson but nothing for their guy for slashing.
Quote:
That looked like a kick…

Literally never seen that called a goal.

FOKIN BOL####

Am I crazy or is that not the most distinct kicking motion you could possibly do? It’s not like he was trying to stop himself…
Quote:
Interesting no challenge
Quote:
I don't know why they haven't changed the rule to if skates are lifted, then no goal, when the rule really is there to prevent blade related injury rather than forcing you to put the puck in with your stick, because it's clearly allowed when you redirect the puck in, and I'd argue those two are pretty similar to some extent.
Quote:
Why does the league seem to hate the Caps? You never see these consistent objectively bad calls for the teams we are playing against. Is it really just from us being absolute #### heads with Hunter and the boys in the 80s/90s?

I'm sure the Caps just spotted the Flames a period. They'll come back and win.

Might stretch this out to the playoffs. Could be a bubble team at this point
I actually think a couple more losses might be needed. This team stinks right now and the mgmt and coaching staff need to see more of the true colours
Are we still dead last in the league? Soft as baby ####
Quote:
Okay, it's at least a little bit funny that we got shut out 5 on 5 after stupidly scratching one of our best 5 on 5 scorers. I think Knob has lost the plot a bit.
Quote:
Teams are ramping up for the stretch drive and the Oil are still in neutral, playing like they're trying not to get injured.
Quote:
16-4 the high danger chances. That was an utter schooling.
This team has lost it. Sell the team, Daryl. Or at least fire Schwartz. That would be a good start.
Quote:
So much wrong right now. No physical play, no speed, no goal scorers, no goaltending, poor coaching, no defense, nothing is working right now.
Quote:
Wonder if this loss will trigger them to do f***ing something other than waste all our saved cap on a guy they decided to sit.
Kapanen should be waived, brings nothing that Skinner doesn’t.
Quote:
Only question is how many games is this gonna go?
Is this gonna be one of our annual months off? Probably. Must be nice to be an Oiler. Can just take a month off mid season every year and nobody in the org bats an eye. Holding a player accountable that badly needs it? Making an example of someone? Nah, not here.
We’ll just lose 8 games and piss a season into the wind. It just what we do here. f***ing p***yes.
Quote:
Yep. I don't really blame them. You can't ask a team to keep doing this stupid dog and pony show every regular season, at some point the players check out to it. Every year is the same thing, either the basket of crap that is Skinner/Koskinen tier goaltending or 39-year-old Mike Smith who you know is geriatric and won't have anything left in the tank after round 1 of a playoffs.
Quote:
I roasted Bouch, Nuge and Skinner after the Philly game, the Washington game I decided to laugh it off. I’m back to roasting Bouch, Nuge and Skinner once again.
Wtf is wrong with these clowns? Two limp dick players and a 6’4” goalie who can’t even stop a wrap around.
There’s no Cup coming this year and I’d bet on it.
Quote:
Calling us a train wreck would be a compliment
Quote:
In an odd way, the team getting spanked the next two might be the best thing that can happen to us.
Might force an even bigger shake up than simple additions. I think both goalies need to go, and probably need to move out some of the ass in the bottom 6 too.
We need a life injection here, not just nipping around the edges. Shock therapy is required, because like always this group is comfortable just being comfortable.
Quote:
Absolutely no cohesiveness.
Seems like every rush is 1v5 with zero support and minimal speed, like they don't know what everyone else is doing.
Biggest thing I'm concerned about is who generated the spark to turn it around? This team needs a punishing physical presence in the worst way.
Quote:
Objects are farther away than they appear.
Got a look at how a Cup level team prepares, executes, and works as a collective towards a common goal. And then there are the Oilers. This roster isn't good enough with significant holes across all position areas. Puck management issues are rampant. Own mistakes commonplace. Little sustained offensive pressure and strange tendencies to pass out of high danger areas. High volume low calorie shot count but the critical shooting percentage is underwater.
High variance in play quality is not an attribute of true elite Cup contenders.
Quote:
Honestly, a root canal is not as bad as watching a game and I’m absolutely serious. You get anaesthetic during a root canal. You don’t get anaesthetic watching an Oilers game.
Quote:
Hmmm…
I think it’s going to be fun watching the Flames / Nucks battle for the last wild card
spot. One of those teams may need to go on a streak at some point.
Not sure either team will catch the kings, but anything’s possible, the make up game Flames / Kings at the end of the season may have playoff implications.
Quote:
Everyone is trying to one up each other about how upset they are

4 losses in a row where we were heavily outplayed the entire time... that is more than just a rough patch
This team is supposed to be a Stanley cup contender, contenders don't get heavily outplayed 4 games in a row.
Quote:
thank you drai and savoie for fighting hard all game but can the rest of the team please return from their extended vacations before the next game
Quote:
A new goalie would help but it ain’t fixing the issue that the team is terrible in all three zones.
Effort level is pathetic and needs to be fixed asap.

It seems like Coronato's ceiling might be pretty high. I wonder if he gets 40 goals at some point
I like the Cammalleri comparisons. In today’s game, I think he also compares well with Debrincat only Coronato is way better defensively. He was absolutely gassed on that goal but still managed to snipe one top corner.
Still wondering what is up with Backlund… he did not look great tonight. Had multiple poor decisions with the puck in his own zone. Was hoping the time off would be enough for him to rest up and potentially heal up a bit if that’s what’s wrong. I know his advanced stats are still pretty solid this year (not tonight though)… and his offensive game has always been pretty limited but, at this point, it seems like the only offence he can generate is a secondary assist on a fourth line-style goal. Pucks seem to die on his stick in the neutral zone or in the offensive zone. Can’t remember the last time he successfully executed an odd man rush chance despite being part of one every few games. He still deserves credit for matching up against top lines every night but I think his drop in offensive instincts/skills could be a contributor to why the flames score so little this year. His line plays lots of minutes most nights but the only offensive finish they show is if Coronato makes an elite shot - and he’s not on that line anymore. Hoping Zary can get his legs back and get his offence going through that line. It’s important to get him back on track - both for team success and for his development.
On a positive note because this was a big win - the fourth line has had its best stretch of the season since coming back from the break. Also liked Frost a lot tonight - his line is looking better and better each game. There were no passengers tonight. For the first time in about a month, the flames played that style where the opposition had very little space and time to make plays.
