Forgive my first post here:
But how do we celebrate Ovechkin so much when he's such a strong Putin advocate?
genuine question! and hello all, been watching this forum since I was 21, 19 years ago. It's been fun.

I don't know about you, I separate politics from sport so I can just enjoy sport and keep it an escape rather than making everything a fight. Just enjoy it!

This thread is littered with that discussion. It’s kind of old now.
I hope he gets three tonight but Flames win. Let’s see that record fall this season!

Meh, the current record holder is a Trump (and therefor Putin) supporting drunkard, total traitor, and played for the most shameful and gross team in the league to boot. It's a lesser of evils situation here.

I also hope he gets 3 tonight, but very little chance the flames are able to pot 3. Low offensive output and all.

I was a huge fan of Ovi even from his junior/semi-pro days in the early 00s. I thought he was a terrific human too (lots of charitable giving) and I loved how he played the game. He's still top 3 in hits all-time. Then in 2014 with Crimea and Putin thing, I cooled off. After the 2022 invasion, I down right turned on him.
Recently a Russian ballet dancer (male) was murdered by Putin for speaking out against the war. So I actually now have a smidge of wiggle room for Ovi.
I also hate Wayne Gretzky and he's a Trump supporter - meaning he is a Putin supporter as well. Wayne has Ukrainian roots, so especially #### that traitor.
Finally, watching an unbreakable record be broken is amazing - no matter who the parties involved are. I doubt we see the goals or points or assists record touched in our lifetimes.

I think for many it's the achievement that people are cheering for. I honestly thought this record would never be broken given the Gretzky played in peak NHL goals era. Outside of his political alignment (which isn't great), Ovi hasn't committed any major crimes, abused women, or been a bad dude so to me it's one of those things where I choose to look at the achievement and how we are witnessing history.

It'll go one of two ways-- nothing to report tonight, or somehow a historic 14 goal night to break the record.

Heard someone talk about 1000 goals, seemed bold at first but at age 39 hes on pace for 60 goals. Assuming the 13 this year, that's 105 goals away, divide that by say 3 years, that's 35 goals a year. In this era, players are playing longer, for example- Jagr.
I think it is doable, not easily but doable.

If he gets 900 this year, I really think he will try for 1000, another 2.5-3 seasons should do it?
It will be lame and a shame to beat Gretzky's record by just a couple goals...

1,000 goals would also make his record even more out of reach for any current NHLer. I think people have projected that Matthews could take the record if he kept his goal scoring up into his late 30s… but it would mean Matthews would have to keep his goal scoring up into his 40s as well. It’s so rare for players to be productive and stay healthy into their late 30s - let alone into their early 40s. Matthews is already struggling to stay healthy for full seasons and he’s a center who plays a heavy defensive game… very, very difficult for guys like that to keep scoring into their late 30s.

1000 I think is in the nice to have, where being the only player in history to get 900 is the main goal. Matthews is the the only player with a reasonable shot at 800 in the current active players. Debatable if he can stay healthy to even have a shot. He probably doesn't even get to 40 goals this year.

Well, I can only speak for myself. Way back when both Ovechkin and Crosby just entered the league, I was cheering for Crosby over Ovechkin because Crosby is a Canadian kid, no politic involved.
And now, Ovechkin is trying to break a record of a person who played for the Oilers, a player I have hated since he entered the league, I want to see that record fall, don't care who is doing the breaking.
To further answer your question, in my personal opinion, Ovechkin is Russian, so he choose to support Putin, agree or not, is understandable. On the other hand, the record holder, is a born and raised Canadian, and chose to kiss Trump's ass, to me anyway, is unforgivable.

Boo, he got one against the Flames. 12 to go.
If he gets 12 in his next 18 games, he'll beat the record in fewer games played than Wayne (1487 gp).
The Caps have 24 games remaining.

One goal every two games here on out. Gotta think the record is going down this season provided he stays healthy. Caps have such a big lead in the East, too, that they can cheat a little to pad his stats.

I think it’d be cool to have the puck from Ovechkin’s 899th goal.

It’s crazy to think that just a few years ago the Caps looked to be ripe for a rebuild, if not for Ovi’s record chase. Now here they are, top of the heap and record in sight. Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

The difference between winners and losers isn't that great in the NHL. You need 2-3 forwards who can consistently bring offence, a serviceable goalie, and a couple of solid defenders. The rest you can acquire. Strome stepping up, PLD turning things around, and Protas coming forward put that team over the top.
If the Flames had a consistent PPG forward and a high end offensive d-man, they'd be way up there too.
