If he wanted to win he would have signed in Colorado. He wants to get paid.
What is interesting to think about now is does Colorado pull the trigger if they saw the projected cap numbers. I think those came out after the deal.
This happened in the CFL, free agency started and after teams made deals, they announced the cap is much higher lol.
Some teams do a have a lot of cap space including Carolina but they have to sign a bunch of guys.
Really does look like the Sharks, Jackets, Hawks, Ducks, Flames, UHC, Flyers have almost full rosters but cap space to use.

I wonder if Rants for Petterson swap makes any sense.

Vancouver wants a UFA to be?

Sharks are an underrated option. They could use a big ticket lifter up front with celebrini. Don't think they have anything Carolina would want to compete now, but I could see them pitching hard for his services in FA.
If the sharks score can also score a good defensive dman I think they'll be very well built. Rantanen would make them much more dangerous sooner, but they probably don't need him. Could definitely see them taking Schaefer if they pick #1.

If you are a vet and want to compete for the majority of your deal the Sharks make a lot of sense. A young team talented team with a 18-20 year olds that will be playing their best hockey during your stint.
Jackets are an option as well with young centers.

Steinberg makes it sound like the Flames will go hard for Rantenan if he's available.

Nah, maybe if he were a centre. $14M would be worth it to get that guy.
But a winger, no way. I just can't see that being an itch Conroy needs to scratch.
Unless maybe he thinks Cozens Rantanen is the modern day Conroy Iggy equivalent.

Steinberg made it sound like the Flames would go hard for paying Dillon Dube $6 million a year.
Steinberg says a lot of silly things, usually because he's bad at math and isn't thinking about the cap.

The Dube $6M per talk from Steinberg was one of, if not the craziest take he's had lol that was insanity when he was talking about that.
However he's usually more on the money than not and it has been reported recently that Conroy is a big fan of Rantanen and would try to target him if he made it to UFA, so certainly not a stretch

I think the Canes are "stuck" with Rantanen, if they're looking to recoup the value they dealt to get him. It certainly sounds like he's going to test free agency unless a team blows him out the water. Tough to trade for a rental at such a premium price, when some of these teams can get him for just money in the off-season.

The very very last thing this club needs is to pay another winger 10 million plus. Makes no sense at all. This team needs play driving difference makers centres, and there only getting that through the draft

He's a short term superstar rental at a low price. Any contender would want him. Including CAR, so I think you are right. They won't get anything better to help their odds of winning this year.
They don't seem to be in stock the cabinets for later mode. But assets they get for moving him could be used to acquire someone else in the off season.
It's a strange quandary they've voluntarily put themselves in.

So he wouldn’t sign in Colorado for 12M so the Canes turn around and offer him 12.5M.
Don’t think he signs for less than 14.6 per season.

I’m surprised marner hasn’t signed. Treliving going to let another player walk to UFA again? Marner should be easy he seems like a guy who will only play for Toronto but not at a discount as we found out last time.

$11.75 for Colorado and the opening offer is higher than the $12.5 according to Friedman

MacKinnon got 12.6 100k more than McDavid. I think if Rantanen is using Leon as his comparable he will want to do something similar on the open market.
We don’t know what discount he offered Colorado if he feels he is worth 14M plus. I believe he uses the same agency as Leon.
Is he a consistent 100 player away from Maackinnon and Makar or is he a 70-80 point player which isn’t bad but awful for 14M.
It’s a gamble a very very expensive gamble. That’s why I think a San Jose or Chicago fit.
