Would be pretty crazy to see Rantanen traded again before the deadline. Especially since Carolina would need to get a legit top line forward back.
What are some teams that are also playoff contenders that would be looking for that kind of trade? I’m really struggling to find a good fit. If Carolina is ok with getting futures, there are plenty of options for trade partners but I wouldn’t think that would be the case. They can’t go Necas to Rantanen to picks/prospects in a year where they have cup aspirations.

I wonder if Calgary might be interested in Zucker from Buffalo -- pure rental but he's put together a pretty solid season on a one year deal. Maybe as part of a package containing other elements but could be a good addition for a playoff push.

I don't think so. They want a C. Plenty of options at LW for the Flames. Also Conroy has said he isn't interested in rentals.

Seravalli on flames nation today quoting a GM source. I’m paraphrasing Seravalli here but his GM source said that no GMs in the league feel good about trading for Pettersson. Not sure if that qualifies as news… you could maybe interpret that as no GM is willing to pay anything of good value for Pettersson right now. Pinder took that to mean a Pettersson trade would maybe have to be a problem-for-problem trade similar to the PLB for Kuemper trade from last year.

Petterson for Huberdeau..
Or if its a problem for problem... Pettersen for Nurse +?
McDavid with Petterson could be lethal.

I know he doesn't have trade protection, but I recall in the past when he was on the block, there was talk that he didn't want to play in Canada. I wouldn't risk bringing a malcontent into the locker room, especially for a winger.

As a rental? Every contender! He has a small expiring contract and CAR can retain to make things work. He'd get a massive haul of picks and prospects.
When is that last time a player that good hit the market on a small expiring contract like Rantanen?
Frank mentioned Vegas on his show this morning. Can you imagine?

I could see LA getting Rantanen. They have a lot to offer and should be looking to take that next step

Yeah but I don’t think Carolina will want picks/prospects. They will want a top line forward. Not just a 2nd line forward - a top line forward. That’s what they had to give up (Necas) for Rantanen so I think they need something like that back. Otherwise, they have essentially made their team worse this year when they should be competing for a cup.
Someone suggested Vegas as an option. Not sure who they could trade that would be enough… Maybe Barbashev + Howden + pick? Don’t know if those players would be enough because those are 2nd/3rd line players.

The hockey gods like to pit LAK against EDM, they have to beat them. This would certainly help.

What if Colorado trades back for him. They have the picks and prospects.

I am sure they have some random prospect or player that no one knows about but is coveted by the Canes GM.

Would the Canes go back to trying to land Pettersson if they flip Rantanen?

It's Vegas, I could see them getting the necessary assets and making that trade in the next 10 days or whatever using leverage/extortion or whatever spellbook McCrimmon uses against his colleagues. Knights always seem to be in on the top talent hitting the trade market and then find a way to make it happen.

Would need to be bargain bin pricing. No chance the flames are paying any value for a pure rental in his 30’s especially on the wing.

He could be CAR's Tkachuck. That would really make things interesting out East.
(not output, moreso the missing ingredient for their team)

That’s a really tough call for LA. Don’t think Carolina says no to that - especially if Rantanen does not want to sign with Carolina. It’s LA that it would be tougher to decide. Rantanen is what you hope Byfield develops into. Byfield is still young despite being in the league for a few years now. I think LA would have to consider it.
