For terrible you have to look at the D

1st game back after the break? 2 points is 2 points. Definitely needed those in any fashion given their schedule for the next month.

Flames win, Oilers lose (vs WSH), Canucks lose (vs UTA).

That is what I call a perfect night.

We had "Big Save Dave".

Is it too early to dub him "Big Goal Joel"?

I really liked the whole first line tonight. They were regularly pushing the play in the o-zone and could have had more points.

Despite the goal, the 4th line was both good and terrible at times tonight. All I ask for that line is consistency. Need to find it. Pospisil was a good influence on that group. That goal doesn't happen without him making plays for his linemates.

Andersson was dog#### tonight. I rarely say that, but he looked worse than Barrie was of late. Just totally out to lunch. He's been trending that way for quite some time now. I hope he figures it out, either as a long-term piece here or as a trade bait. He's too good to play like that.

Also, FYI, I will of course be at the upcoming Flames/Panthers game with my son. The question is...do I go in Flames colors or Panthers colors? The choices are a either a Monahan or Iginla jersey, or a Bjugstad or Barkov jersey. Poll to be posted soon.

I have lived in a few different cities and have become a very big fan of certain franchises in other leagues.

But when it comes to the NHL, I am only ever a fan of the Flames.

I don't know from where your Flames fandom was borne, but I could never imagine cheering for a different team over the Flames. Fortunately my kids learned that as well, despite not having lived in Calgary. They are very used to wearing road team colors at NHL games.

It's tough to sell a Flames fandom over a Panthers one to my son. He's seen a lot of playoff success over the last few years, including a cup win that absolutely cemented him as a Panther fan. To be fair, I've become a very big Panthers fan over the years as well (see the moniker).

It's not that different to the Flames win in 1989. I was about the same age as he was last year when they won. That's what made me a hardcore Flames fan more than anything else. It's hard to tell him he should cheer for this mediocre franchise going through a rebuild over a championship team.

I still cheer for both teams equally. The jersey wearing is more about respect for the player than it is about hardcore cheering for a franchise. Just openly mulling the possibilities...

I find I agree with almost everything Huska says in any of his pressers. Ugly win and they’re going to have to get much faster for Tuesdays game. Hopefully Bahl is fully recovered from everything and we get his reliability back on D.

Don’t look now but Anaheim is slowly creeping back into the race. They are on a heater.

Flames have a tough road trip and the canucks are dropping like a lead weight.

Could be an interesting race for WC2

If we make playoffs, it will only be because of Dustin Wolf. And also the fact that every other team in the race is also a trash can.

Are the Canucks, Ducks, Blues even that good? That being said, clearly we aren't going to tank so playoffs is the next best option.

I think making the playoffs with the amount of young players we have on the team this year would be a big accomplishment and massive for their development.

I think they probably need to win at least 2 on this road trip. It could decide how the rest of the season goes and what happens at the deadline

I believe that Iyla Solovyov's NHL ceiling with the Flames is still as high as a 2nd pairing LD that can sub in as a RD whenever necessary.
He's shown that he can put up some points this season, he's been a 1/2 point a game with the AHL Wranglers.
Perhaps he could still top out as a hybrid NHL D, but a defensive D is probably his future in the NHL.

Thank you as always for the around the league report!

I visited the Oilers forum and they are in absolute meltdown mode. Lots of fans saying their window is over, and the team will never win a cup. I hope they keep it up!

Why don't you go in either of your Flames jerseys and then your son in a Panthers jersey, presuming he has one.

Improving?

They have 3 points in their last 11 games.

If you consider 30% expected goals when he was on the ice decent, then sure.
