News Roundup

NHL Calder Trophy Tracker: Sharks, Canadiens And Flames Still Have The Best Rookies Right Now

There's a solid NHL rookie class, but the Sharks' Macklin Celebrini, Canadiens' Lane Hutson and Flames' Dustin Wolf have separated themselves from the pack. Here's why.

'Think We'll Have A Good Line'

Like several of his Flames teammates, Yegor Sharangovich spent the 4 Nations break in search of sunshine.

He and his family found it, in Mexico.

Relaxing, yes, but also a breath of fresh air - figuratively and literally - for his young son.

“It was the best time for our son,” Sharangovich said with a grin Thursday. “He loved it, being outside, swimming in the pool. It was a good time.”

Back in Calgary, where the sunshine is ever-present, but the temperatures have been anything but tropical, it’s back to work for the 26-year-old and his Flames squad.

A Flame from the Past: Tobias Rieder

Do you remember Tobias Rieder?
Every week, we’ll look at a forgotten Calgary Flames player in the weekly series “A Flame From the Past.” Of course, the player had to have played a significant number of games for the Flames – at least a full season. Each week, I’ll put every Flames season (since moving to Calgary) in the Wheel of Names. This week, it landed on the 2019-20 season..

Don’t sleep on Flames college prospect Trevor Hoskin

As a 20-year-old freshman, Hoskin has posted 11 goals and 36 points so far in 31 games. He’s been named his conference’s rookie of the month twice, in October and January.
Here’s how he’s performed relative to, well, his various peer groups:

Hoskin leads all NCAA freshmen in points. The four freshman nearest to him in the scoring race are Montreal first-rounder Michael Hage, 2025 draft prospect James Hagens, 22-year-old Gavin Morrissey, and Washington second-rounder Cole Hutson.
Hoskin is third in the Atlantic conference in points. The two players head of him are 24-year-old Liam McLinskey and 22-year-old Felix Trudeau.
Hoskin is 11th overall in the NCAA in points.

The Calgary Flames need to bring back Sam Bennett in free agency

Despite bursting onto the scene with the team, Bennett could never find his footing with the Flames. He never scored more than 20 goals, never posted over 40 points, and never was really given a top-line opportunity with the team’s stars at the time.

That all changed in his career when he was traded to the Florida Panthers. He finally became that player many expected him to be, while also establishing himself as a playoff performer that many would dream over.

Examining the Flames’ playoff outlook following the 4 Nations Face-Off break

The Flames left off on a sour note in their final game before the break, ceding a 2-0 lead late to the Kraken on Feb. 8, in an eventual 3-2 OT loss. That gut-wrenching defeat made it three straight, their first three-game skid since November.
Prior to the teams’ struggles, they had held the final wildcard spot in the West, and with only the Vancouver Canucks to beat out, Calgary seemed poised to make a run at the postseason. Now, nearly two weeks later, there is much more skepticism surrounding the team and its playoff odds.

Say What - 'Feel More Like Myself'

Head Coach Ryan Huska on a full week of practice:

“They don't like to practice. I think that's something more that coaches like. They want to play the games - but I do think they recognize the importance of this time to re-tool or remember the important details of our structure and the habits we expect our players to play with. So, I think they recognize the importance of that. But I do think they'll be happy when this week has is done.”

Flames' Three Biggest (Positive) Surprises Of The Year

Technically, the entire Calgary Flames team has been a surprise this season. Depending on your point of view, it could be a positive or negative one.

If you were hoping for a lottery draft pick, it's been a bit of a bummer, but if you just love the team being competitive in a race for a fringe playoff spot, you've probably been pretty happy.

How Fast Are the Calgary Flames? Breaking Down the Numbers

Have you ever wondered exactly where the Calgary Flames rank in terms of high-end speed?
It’s probably fair to say that most Flames fans can sense that their team isn’t the fastest in the NHL. They’re surely faster than some bottomfeeders, like the Chicago Blackhawks, but how do they hold up against the rest of the NHL?

It's been a while. That break is nice as a fan as well because it makes me look forward to the final 25 games or so rather than feeling a lot of fatigue watching the team.

Here's hoping that Bahl and Zary make it back into the lineup tonight. The slotting of players looks a lot better with those two in.

Thankful the Canucks lost last night. There was an alternate world where the Canucks win their back 2 back and the Flames lose to the Sharks. Imagine being 7 points back even before that road trip.

Thankfully they have a chance to pull within 1 and I will be pretty PO’d if the Flames don’t show up tonight

Quick note, this is a national telecast on Sportsnet West. The Ontario and East channels will join this game in progress after the Avs-Blues game is over. Bummer that the Flames couldn't start this game 30 minutes later.

They need to start stepping up if they want to get into the layoffs. Probably need .500 on the roadtrip. If they go 0fer they will probably be finished.

Really hope Bahl and Zary are back.

Some players get noticeably better or worse after the February break. I'm interested in seeing if any Flames are affected by this.

If Bahl is back I like our chances of climbing back into a playoff spot as I believe he is the most important but under appreciated skater (because Wolf is the most important). Watching the 4 nations tournament and seeing how defensively sound a team has to be I think it’s not crazy to think Bahl could wear the maple leaf in a best on best tournament in the near future. If Zary is back I think the full 4 line depth looks decent and hopefully they can play the heavies in the upcoming road trip with confidence to control pace/play. Looking forward to cheering the Flames on tonight!

A loss tonight coupled with some other wins around the league and the top ten pick starts to look realistic.

So win or lose, we win.
