When is the last time we’ve had a defenseman like Parekh to cheer for on our team?
Phaneuf? Macinnis? Neither of those were his style. Never?

MacInnis had 39 points in 47 OHL games (0.83 points/game) the year he was drafted, then improved to 75 in 59 (1.27 points/game) the following season. Parekh’s production over that same timeline is much more potent, he operated at a 1.45 points-per-game clip in his draft year and has since upped that mark to 1.57 this season. Parekh, who has played 161 OHL games to MacInnis’ 159, already has more goals (79) than MacInnis did (74) in his entire junior career.

Hughes does seem like a more apt comparison.
Maybe he's his own player though, and teams will be looking to draft their own Parekh in the future.
He seems really smart, resilient and determined though. Because of those qualities, I'd say his chances of converting his game to the pros is higher than it might be with another highly-touted OHL player.

MacInnis couldn’t skate when he started his career. He managed to improve enough to make the team but he had the best shot in the league at the time and really knew how to use it. I don’t think the Flames had another shooter like him.
Parekh is nothing like big Al.

Phaneuf was pretty sexy. Only flames player I bought an artifact of. But nowhere close to the offensive potential, all murder potential. Too bad he got knee geeked and was a tad dummy.

It's like people forget that Phaneuf was an absolute wagon for the first 5 years after he was drafted. He would have been in the NHL in his D+2 year if not for the lockout, and the team should have brought him into the lineup instead of Brennan Evans. But they didn't want to lose two potential contract years because of the looming lockout. In his first three seasons he was the top young D in the league. But the injuries caught up and he fizzled out. But in those years he had no equal, not Suter, or Keith, or Weber....those guys emerged in their early to mid 20's.
Parehk is a good solid prospect. But Buium from the same draft still has people who like him better...that's probably some who like Dickenson. Phaneuf out of a hyped Draft by year two was the guy with all the hype.

The only reason he didn't win Rookie of the Year was because he finished 3rd in voting behind a couple names I'm sure people would recognize... Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.

I like that the Flames had the #1 and #2 scoring d-man in the OHL last year with Parekh and Brz, and the Flames again have the #1 and #2 scoring d-man in the OHL this year with Parekh and Mews.
Morin is also having a quietly solid season in the Q and is a staple for a team that could contend for the memorial cup.
Embarrassment of riches at D.

The interviewer posted above was not kind about the Q. Did not look very favorably on Morin or Gridin as a result. Basically Meh'd both of them.

I’m gonna say it so that I can eat crow later, but I feel the exact same way about the Q and our players there.

What a piss poor way to evaluate talent. Bukala's OHL bias is hilarious. Additionally he had Gridin as a late 2nd round pick in his rankings last year so he's never been high on the kid.
Sure, the OHL has more talent and is a stronger league overall than the QMJHL, but that also works both ways. Gridin is top 10 in Q scoring as a rookie in that league despite playing with no other NHL drafted prospects in Shawinigan. He leads the team in goals, assists, points, shots on net, and plus minus.
It's funny to me that Bukala believes Parehk's numbers would be even better in the Q, and that Gridin's numbers would dip in the OHL. It would in fact be the exact opposite of that.

Im curious how Parehks numbers would go down against weaker competition?
Or am I misunderstanding something here?

Because he'd also have significantly less talent around him.
He wouldn't be hopping over the boards with the likes of Michael Misa, Igor Chernyshov, and Kristian Epperson.

I don't think its necessarily wrong, the Q has always been seen as the weaker league of the 3, the competition is just not the same.
It's why I know I've always personally cautioned drafting highly offensive guys in the Q as their game seemingly never translates after that.

I don't like the league, therefore the players all suck. Quality analysis.
Is the Q the weakest of the 3 CHL leagues? Of course. Does that mean all the players suck, and scouts can't rationally evaluate the players? Only in the land of boneheads.

D'Artagnan Joly as an example!
I am mixed. I think HLM brings up good points about Gridin and comparative team mate talent helping to boost parekh's numbers. But I also know that the Q is generally a weaker league, producing fewer and fewer NHL ready prospects year over year. It's pretty clear that the O is a better league, better high end talent and depth.
BUT WHY DO Q TEAMS ALWAYS WIN THE MEM CUP!?!
In truth, I think you can't lump prospects together in conventional ways- nationality, league, team mates... at this stage of their development those things are relatively unimportant compared to player habits, tendencies on ice, and motivation to improve. Those can't be assessed on a league wide basis, except that perhaps some leagues emphasize farming those skills in their players more.

Who was the last impactful player that the QMJHL produced? Serious question.
I did some searching:
- Ehlers
- PLD
- Hischier
- Mackinnon
I mean not a long list at all. I wouldn't even really bother drafting from that league.
Two of them were #1 picks.
One is a #3 overall pick
One is a #9 overall pick.
Three of them are from Halifax Mooseheads.
From just that stereotype- I would think Morin and Gridin will not amount to anything significant.

Not sure how you are defining impactful but you also have guys like Alex Lafreniere, Noah Dobson, Thomas Chabot, Nikita Kucharov (drafted out of Russia but then came over and played in the Q, and others.
It produces less players than the WHL and OHL but I think it's a mistake to completely ignore any league when it comes to drafting players. Saying something like " I wouldn't even really bother drafting from that league." is silly.
