There have been strong gusts of winds today at YYZ.

Depends. A lot of the main roads are pretty good, and there's been no snow crews at the airport since 1100 this morning, so the surface shoudl be in pretty decent shape.

I don't know if this is true but one of the talking heads on CNN was saying that the crew may have notified YYZ of an issue ahead of landing because apparently the fire fighting crews were waiting for the plane to touch down.

CTV saying three people have been flown to the hospital. One passenger was taken to the children's hospital; not sure if that was one of the passengers flown to the hospital.

Entirely possible; the code would have gone out, and the north fire hall is fairly close.

Winds were 270 degrees 27kt gusting 35kt. I read they landed on rwy 5. Is that a strong cross wind situation?

This is an incredibly false statement.

That can't be correct, if they landed 05 in those winds it would be a crazy strong tailwind component. Were they actually landing 23?

Edit: yeah, looked on flightradar tracking, they were landing 23. Current winds are 280 25 gust 32 knots, which is a crosswind component of 16 gust 22 knots.

For the entire day, and this weather has been forecast for days.
To see a post already blaming this on ATC is insane.

Supposedly from a pilot who witnessed the crash:
“I just witnessed it happen. Delta CRJ struck a wing landing 23 and cartwheeled. Tail and wing separated. Bad crosswinds.”

Wouldn't runway 23 be a tailwind? 5 is the number painted on the NE end of that runway. I thought they would be heading into the wind for landing. I'm probably mixed up on this.

Yup, you're mixed up. 23 is on the NE part of the runway, indicating it is facing 230 degrees.

It'd be a decent crosswind if they landed 23 or 33L, roughly the same.

I had even looked it up on Google Maps and then my brain switched it around. Thanks for clarifying!

Sorry... got that from one of the emergency response staff... just initial scattered thinking.
Most of the passengers bussed out. Looks like no flight until tomorrow maybe.
