Went and checked out Universal Language today, which was Canada’s submission to the Oscars this year. It’s set in a version of Canada where the sense is Quebec has separated though it’s never really directly addressed, only hinted at. The movie is basically everything you’d want in a Canadian movie. Gloriously cheap and homemade looking, full of bizarre and surrealist touches. Depictions of Canada that make it look like Eastern Europe for some reason but it was also quite funny and I feel like there was more there. I can’t wait to see it again comes highly recommended.

I watched The Substance, I felt like it was just okay. Everything felt super on the nose, and the quality just felt lazy. Like so many scenes you could tell were just in front of a green screen. It felt like Society but for the Tik Tok generation, like shots were set up so they could be posted online for clicks and views. Demi Moore was great in it but outside of her performance id say check out an old school Cronenberg film or Society instead.

^ I think most if not all the sets were real, not green screen.

Likewise most of the effects were done practically with the director's own hands being used for POV shots.

Disagree. I thought this movie was brilliant, and from what I've read most of the effects and sets were practical.

The Substance is great and that behind the scenes feature makes me want to watch it again.

I found myself watching the Gorge because of the cold. Enjoyed it. The effects were terrible but I had fun. Sometimes those escapist thrillers with a simple premise and a bit of sci-fi are just what the doctor ordered. Reminded me a bit of Oblivion with Tom Cruise.

The Order is available on Prime. Really solid FBI vs Aryan nations, based on real events, movie. And most notably, filmed in Calgary and area with a whole lot of recognizable settings.

I can't agree with this take at all. None of this film felt "lazy" or for the Tik Tok generation. This was very much in the Cronenberg style, but very focused on females?

Over the top? Sure, but wouldn't call it on the nose at all.

Watched Extraction 2 with Chris Hemsworth. A good shoot and beat em up flick if that's what you like. 6/10

Watched The Gorge last night. Pretty solid sci-fi action/horror with a cool premise. Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy are both terrific.

I think I was surprised by the amount of backstory there was. As I alluded to above, the first half felt like it dragged, but in the end I thought the movie was quite good as well.

For anyone with kids under 10, Paddington in Peru is a pretty good little family film. Highlighted by some good supporting performances by Olivia Coleman and Antonio Banderas, it's also a pretty unique story apart from a lot of the other standard family films. It's hard to find a genuinely sweet, yet interesting movie for families, but this scratches the itch. Not earth shattering or anything, but recommended none the less (pretty much only recommended for families). 7.5/10.

Mrs Cheese and I watched a few movies last night, The Gorge was a good movie and even though the story is a bit slow to start its necessary to create the relationship. Enjoyed this one and give it a good 7/10.
We also watched, Back in Action, an attempt at Jamie Fox and Cameron Diaz being undercover CIA spies and trying to raise a family. Some funny spots and very few good action scenes outside of Cameron trying to show she is badass. Have no idea why Glenn Close decided to take on a bit role here, it was not a good movie. Kids might like it. 4/10

Agree - the Gorge is a good popcorn film. Even has a bit of "meet cute" if you or your other is into it.

Great chemistry between the actors. Felt like genuine attraction there, and they played off each other in a fun way.

For a greenscreen movie, it looks pretty good (for a greenscreen movie!). Kept me immersed.

Zombie premise holds up longer than most zombie premises. I mean at a certain point all zombie flicks turn to significant plot holes, lack of good decisions, unlimited ammo, instantly healing injuries... and this one is no different... but it took a while before getting there. There were interesting creative choices that 100% paid off.

Worth your time to steam on Apple.

I like a movie that actually tells you why there are zombies, or whatever you want to call the monsters.

This movie shows the lengths a guy will go to to get laid. It was fun even with pretty bad CGI.

The Substance for my money achieved what it set out to achieve very effectively.

Do I think right now it's maybe suffering when some folks watch it because it is a victim of its own hype? Probably!

And what the hell with Argyle. It has it's roots in the Kingsman franchise, but somehow manages to lose all of that, and put out the worst looking insanely boring "action" film.

What a turd.
Man, I could not agree more with you. Gods this movie was awful. My only saving grace is that I trusted my gut and refused to watch this in theatres with my friends when it came out. What a #### movie.

I think when you push a lot of buttons and go places where they did, that it's not going to be unanimously well received by the masses. I don't have any issues with people not liking it as movies like this should strive to be somewhat divisive.

Oh for sure.

I think too that folks are calling a movie like this Oscar bait, compared to something that is more traditional Oscar bait shows how far expanding who makes of the academy has come.

I watched a pretty fun 90s party film from Wales; Human Traffic. The films follows a group of friends who hate their jobs and live for the weekend so they can go to raves and go clubbing. The soundtrack is fantastic with great 90s club music, it made me want to hop into my time machine, que up Much and watch some Electric Circus.
