Why don’t we just allow everyone to get this “training”? Pay 2000 to AMA and now you can your phone driving? Oh ya, because it’s horse crap.
Do they actually have training for this, weaving in and out of pylons on an old runway at 80 mph while taking a Dickpic and attaching it to a WhatsApp message with your right hand?

It’s not just phones that cause distracted driving. So many people are just too unskilled to concentrate on driving properly. Just the simple operation of their vehicle overwhelms them and any extra care and attention is impossible.
People can’t merge at speed because their brains don’t work that quickly. Or remembering to signal is just too much when just making the turn requires the bulk of their concentration. They can barely pay attention to what they’re doing, never mind what you’re doing.
The guy I nearly hit head on probably wasn’t unskilled but he overestimated his skill and did a dumb move. That’s a problem too, especially with a lot of guys with big egos, often in big trucks.

lol I didn't even know it was about hockey until you just said this right now. First I've ever heard of 4 Nations Cup in my entire life was when the guy posted he's tired of people saying they don't care about it.
Don't care? I've never even fkn heard of it. Are you saying its kids playing hockey? OMG, why would anybody care lol. That's insane.
Want to hear about my kids snowboarding? No? Didn't think so.

What? No. It's an international hockey tournament being put on by the NHL that started last night.
I assume you just never venture into the FOI forum at all?

Oh, sorry. I thought it was a kids tournament or something. Not sure why I thought that now.
Nope. Don't go into FOI. I'm not kidding when I say I have zero interest in hockey. I care as much about hockey as you care about water polo.
Edit: Not trying to belittle hockey, either. I'll shut up about it. I enjoy OT and have been generally pretty good about keeping my mouth shut so you guys can enjoy being fans of the game. I'll go back to that starting immediately.

They could do that I guess but there just doesn't seem to be an appetite for the city to really clamp down on this even as it seems more and more people seem to be getting back into this bad habit.
|
I agree. I wonder if there is a different way to enforce that. Wearing a seatbelt to me is commonplace, its just a natural action when I get in the car, I dont even think about it. However, if someone doesnt put on a seatbelt? The car will not let you forget it. Ever.
I wonder if there were a way to do the same thing with phones?
But here is an interesting scenario. I dont drive much, so in our family the person who drives the most, my wife, has the nicest car. Thats fine.
The thing is that the Heads-up-Display shows her texts when she gets them and she can, hands-free, dictate texts.
Here's the thing though...its like the thought in her brain has been completely obliterated that NO ONE ELSE CAN DO THAT!
She sends me texts constantly when she KNOWS I'm driving. "Stop here. Can you pick up that? What do you want for dinner?"
"How come you never answer me or do any of the things I ask???"
I. AM. DRIVING! And you KNOW IT!!
Oh yeah. I come home and I havent read, answered or done any of the things she has texted me to do and she is FURIOUS! But try and explain that I cant check my phone when I'm driving and she just isnt having it!

I appreciate you sticking your neck out. I agree that checking your phone while stopped at a light is better than in traffic. Fair point.
You want to really crack down on this? Truck Drivers. I'm not talking Semis, I'm talking pickups.
A huge percentage of those drivers are either construction or sales, but either way during high-traffic hours a big chunk of them are on the clock. And they're taking calls or sending texts, whatever.
If you see a truck scream past you? That guy has someplace to be. You see a Dodge Ram meandering around? That guy is getting paid by the hour.

I didn’t know about 4 Nations until I saw it mentioned here. I only follow the Flames peripherally these days. The new arena paid for by taxpayers was the final straw. I can’t support a business that does that.

Wait till they find out that I've eaten a burger while driving.
|
Sure, and shooting yourself in the arm is safer than in the head. It's still reckless and dumb.
|
I have a phone mount and use Siri via CarPlay in both my vehicles, and to be clear, I agree that it's best not to do it at all. But even as someone to whom this doesn't apply, it's this sort of hyperbole that makes your protestations on the subject rather easy to dismiss as pearl-clutching and overstated.
Let's be real: the vast majority of the time and for the vast majority of people, doing this while stopped at a red light has two typical outcomes:
1. The person quickly does whatever they're doing, the light turns green, and they -- along with everyone else -- proceed as normal. All is well.
2. They become incredibly f'cking annoying to drive behind as they've now been sitting at a green light for a full two seconds and are still solidly on the brakes staring at their device because they can't quite find their proper skin tone for the shrug emoji.
Otherwise, you risk needing to apply this to all sorts of scenarios now that modern cars have overwhelmingly (and annoyingly) switched from physical buttons to touch screens, including but not limited to:
- turning on the air conditioning (because it's buried in a menu)
- switching on the window defogger (because it's buried in a menu)
- turning on the heated seat (because it's buried in a menu)
- checking the map on your navigation screen (because you had to change away from it because everything is buried in a f'cking menu)
- dismissing an ad for an extended warranty so you can see your navigation route again (because you're an idiot who bought a Stellantis product)
I won't say radio / song change because there are steering wheel controls for that. But let's not pretend a quick check-and-dismiss sort of action while the vehicle is at a dead stop is even remotely the actual problem we have with people using mobile phones in the car. When someone's driving and using their phone, you can tell from a distance.

I gave him a legit try but I hate Ben Mulroney as a talk-show just. He’s the worst since Danielle Smith.
