Today, I received a report from the Commander-in-Chief on the situation in the Donetsk and the Kursk regions. In the areas of the Kursk operation, new assaults have taken place—Russia has once again deployed North Korean soldiers alongside its troops.
Assault troops of the BSO 'Eney' OSBr NPU 'Lyut' along with fighters of 'Khizhak' and BPOP on the armored vehicle Oncilla conducted a raid on enemy positions in Toretsk.
Trump announced plans to meet with Zelensky next week. He -once again- spoke about the sheer numbers of dead and wounded and stated that it would have never happened it he was President.
On Feb 3, Ukrainian forces struck the occupied city of Selidove. Reports indicate that all commanders of Russia’s 35th Motorized Rifle Brigade, operating in the Pokrovsk direction, were eliminated. https://twitter.com/user/status/1887939672585687221
Overnight, Russia launched a huge amount of Shahed drones into Ukraine. Out of 112 launched, 81 were shot down and another 31 were supressed by electronic warfare. https://twitter.com/user/status/1887768536589762667
I propose they resurrect one of the old styles of war, where the militaries stand watch as the two leaders face each other in hand to hand combat. Winner gets Crimea. HBO gets broadcast rights.

A Ukrainian military commander has announced the successful use of the country’s first laser weapon on the battlefield, revealing that it has effectively targeted specific objects.
“I will repeat: laser technologies are already striking certain targets at certain altitudes,” Kyiv’s Unmanned Systems Forces commander Vadym Sukharevskyi stated.
No further details regarding the laser weapon’s deployment, including the date and location, were provided.
In December 2024, Sukharevskyi confirmed that Ukraine became the “fifth country to possess” such a weapon.
The laser weapon is dubbed “Tryzub” (Trident), with a reported operational range of two kilometers (1.24 miles).

Is it just me, or does this seem like something that could end up being a huge deal to Russia.

It could complicate the position of Kaliningrad further. Kaliningrad is already severely hurting from sanctions, as Lithuania has been very eager to go after Kaliningrad hard.
I don't think it's likely to become a huge issue on it's own, but it is yet another complete failure for Putin. Sabotaging the underwater cables in the Baltic Sea was obviously in large part an attempt to intimidate the Baltic states from doing this, trying to convince them that they need Russia for their energy security. It very predictably didn't work, and that hurts Putins image as someone who is smart and competent.
There is btw some speculation that Kaliningrad could be looking for independence from Russia now that Russia has drawn a lot of their military out of of there (because they need them in Russia and/or Ukraine.) There is an independence movement, but it's hard to evaluate how much actual support the idea has. Could be anything between 15% to 70%. It's got a population of about 1 million, has actually seen population growth unlike most other areas in Russia, and their economic base would likely make it feasible. (I would also imagine that a Russian-speaking non-Russian state would be a very popular destination for Russian emmigrants.)
That said, I doubt anything really happens around this. Kaliningrad is just too important for Russia. Of course if Russia suffers a massive economic and/or political meltdown, I guess Kaliningrad could seize the moment much the same way as other Baltic states did in the 90's.
Of course if NATO would block access to Kaliningrad in support of the independence movement... But that seems like a pretty far fetched hypothetical. And also a very realistic starting point for WW3.

Yes and no, the term for it is called islanding. The larger the grid you’re connected to just means more stability and capacity for unexpected events. If someone were to attack substations or generation facilities in this area it would now take significantly less effort to make the whole dark. It also makes Kaliningrad more prone to brown outs and other grid related supply issues.
Edit: Wikipedia’s article on islanding gets the layman’s explanation pretty accurate about how and why islanding would occur as well as the benefits and detractors of it. There’s some wording and terminology issues but the message is accurate.
Here's something that makes me reflect on what the US has become as a civilization;
That deal with Ukraine they're working on isn't really something new on its own. The US (like all great military powers) has always used it's military to benefit it's own economy.
However, previously the public was being sold "we are doing good", while economic benefits were being negotiated in closed cabinet meetings and slipped in to the agenda in ways that avoid public attention.
Now the selfish economic benefits are the part that's being done in the open and sold to the public, while the people focused on trying to do what they believe is right are the ones working in the shadows and inserting their agenda between the lines.
The US has traditionally been a nation of boundless optimism, with genuine faith in the significance of "doing the right thing". It was often a sham and misguided, but the belief in the significance of morality was IMO always very genuine.
This all feels lost now. It feels like most Americans are basically reveling in their collectice lack of a moral compass, angry cynicism, and just general emotional misery.
Trump and Musk both used to look like people who have a lot of fun, now they both come off as perpetually angry and unhappy about their daily existence.

"We want, like you, a sovereign and prosperous Ukraine. But we must start by recognising that returning to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic objective," Hegseth told the meeting of Ukrainian officials and more than 40 allies.
"Chasing this illusionary goal will only prolong the war and cause more suffering," he added.
