Default Class 3 Road Test - Tips

Hi CP,

Going in for my Class 3 Road Test next week - any tips/tricks to feel more comfortable doing it? I believe it will just be a bobtail for the road test.

I've been memorizing the steps and pre trip ahead of it. Air brakes are a breeze

I only need it for my CFD application so its not worth me going in for Class 1.

It’s easy, if you have the pre trip and air brakes memorized that’s the only difficult parts. Everything else is typical driving so if you’re a confident driver you will have 0 issues. I took mine 5 years ago and I was only dinged 5 points for driving with only 1 hand on the steering wheel. All in all it took maybe an hour and a half from pre trip to parking.

It's been a long, long, long time since I did mine but it was pretty simple. And if I could pass it anyone can. For me the only thing I had problems with was the simulated backing into a loading dock. I could never get it in one continuous motion so I took the truck to the place where they did the road test/backing text and memorized which tree/parking lot line etc. to start turning at in order to do it. Nailed that part of the test!

Are you doing it through the city or with a third party?

All I really remember from mine was the city tester taking me down that narrow lane on 4th Ave to see if you could keep it between the lines. Pretty simple test

As I recall...all of the Traffic Cones are points. So the more cones you hit the more points you get!

Its like that Pokemon game...gotta hit 'em all!

The driving with one hand thing is so stupid. I taught myself to do this and do it well (err, class 5, not 3) so I wouldn't float from my lane if I had to use my other hand to do the radio, climate control etc. I get that maybe they don't want people to not have two hands for evasive maneuvers, but then maybe just test people based on that and fail them for failing evasive maneuvers or basic driving skills, not whether they drove with one or two hands.

Good luck. I did mine decades ago to drive gravel truck for my dad. I hit every yellow late possible and had two pedestrians just dart out on me. The examiner said afterwards he’d never seen an exam with that many close decisions to make.

Agreed, there is a time and a place where it’s fine. Maybe not on Deerfoot while people are driving like donkeys and weaving through traffic, but highway 2 with no one around? Sure why not.

People should be tested on evasive maneuvers or at least spatial awareness. Something like “what colour is the car behind you on your left?”.
