I believe you are correct. But in this highly hypothetical trade, hopefully the Flames' work ethic would rub off on him and help him to achieve his potential.

Pettersson still has quite a bit of positive value.

Huberdeau still has plenty of negative value.

Then make the trade and trade Pettersson for quite a return.

Calgary gets rid of an unmoveable contract and profit.

At what point does Buffalo take the best assets they can get? They are 12 points out of a playoff spot and right now are slotted to pick 4th overall. They are very likely to draft another young center to replace Cozens.

Draft day they could look at a big move with extra 1sts and prospects for a player that helps now. Most players they will be after are going to be younger and aren't eligible for an NTC.

This whole situation and Cozens play seems like a player who needs and wants a trade anyways. They need the best return they can get and if the Flames are very interested, they have a ton of assets vs the other teams interested.

Thats what I keep saying. Take the draft capital now while players are valued higher, and then flip at the draft when everyone wants picks

Adams probably is trying to save his job though. That is always the issue. Owners and management make decision to fire a GM based on wins and losses and not what the plan is and how they execute it. I'd fire Adams now, but if you decide to stick with him, they need to give him time to execute the new plan. Decide now, GM's trading to save their job can set you back years.

If they trade Cozens for picks and prospects, it may take time for the right player to be available. They need to get the right player, and it might take a team moving on from their Cozens.

They also need to find some 3rd line vets that play the game the right way, too many young small skilled players.

Sabres are most definitely asking too much.

Doesn't help that Cozens is having a train wreck of a season.
