The most interesting thing will be seeing if the players even try. I'll watch highlights but don't want to support the event itself so I won't watch the games.

Team Canada's selections are once again... weird. Anthony Cirelli?

My interest level will be nothing like that of the Olympics because the Olympics is what everyone grew up watching and it is all the countries. With no Russia, Czech Republic, etc it lacks flavor. I'll probably tune into the championship game but I don't know about the rest of the tournament at all. I don't care about it. I'm waiting for the Olympics next February.

I’ll watch the championship game if Canada is in it; nothing else.

Russia won't be at the next Olympics neither.

I would have liked to have seen what Draisaitl and the German team would have done. I remember them as the plucky young underdogs that won Silver in 2018. They may been a threat with Draisaitl playing. Plus if he ran over McDavid it would have added a bit of hilarity

Why is that weird? Cirelli has 40 points in 51 games and is an excellent 2-way player.

According to Dreger, if Crosby is unable to go, Scheifele is the next man up.

How about the country that comes in last, gets replaced by a different country next year?

Relegation! Burn the heathen!!!

Granted, within the context of a 4-team 'tournament' they probably need more teams before they start turfing some.

Although...I wouldn't be opposed to something like the Spengler has, where they have 'invitational' spots? That could spice things up a bit!

Bring in KHL or DEL Champs to compete? It could be neat.

Lol! And just so we're clear, I love the concept of relegation but its just a Taboo in North American sports.

Watch European soccer....often the relegation battle is just as interesting as the Championship battle. There is LOTS on the line.

In North America the crappiest team is rewarded so there is incentive to be that team. In Europe you are viciously punished so there is desperate incentive NOT to be that team.

You are far more knowledgeable than I am about soccer so I'll give you that it might not work in this world.

Well...with relegation in hockey I acknowledge that there are fundamental problems. The Talent-Gap between AHL and NHL is VAST.

You cant just bump an AHL team into the NHL and say 'go for it.' They'll get killed.

The talent-gulf in soccer tends to be a lot smaller and more manageable and at the same time, no salary cap and you dont need to trade for players, you just buy them. If you have the money you just buy them. Its a very different system.

Not to mention, in most places in soccer, the ownership of teams are Wealthy people with their Toys. Some are run as businesses, but thats started sliding away. So with few limits some spend more than others and....its not a level playing field.

So, no, as much as I'd like to see it, I dont think relegation would realistically work in North America.

Like an AHL team playing in the NHL, a College Basketball team playing in the NBA? A second tier football team making it to the NFL? A lower tier baseball team in the MLB.

In my opinion the talent-gap is just too vast for that to be practical and...the revenue gap is similarly vast. North American sports team owners want certainty, its crucially why there are salary caps. The possibility of relegation is the consummate definition of uncertainty.

Thats sort of why I did the 'Heathen, get him!' Joke. North American owners would never support that under any circumstances.

Very well explained but I was referring to the 4 Nations. Not sure how Finland was selected but I thought if they had a bad showing there are a few other countries who could give it a shot next time.

Oh I agree, my total point was....a tournament with only 4 teams? Come on...

Literally only 1 team doesnt get a medal? Can they introduce the Copper medal for 4th place?

Perhaps a 'Trophy of Shame?'

I think you have to look at it a little differently. Less that 'Finland was selected' and probably more along the lines of 'they were one of the few who said 'Yes.'"
