They didn't pass away. That's what happens when you are 95 years old and you go to bed and never wake up.
They were killed by a motorist.

Passed away is just a soft way to say dead. They were murdered by a selfish drunk driver, but passing away is just a nice soft term for the grieving.

Meredith Gaudreau is honoring her late husband Johnny Gaudreau by making a few more permanent memories.
The wife of the seven-time NHL All-Star recently added three tattoos as a tribute to her husband, who was killed by an alleged drunk driver in August 2024. The 31-year-old's brother Matthew, 29, was also killed in the accident, which happened a day before their sister’s wedding in New Jersey.
In a post on Instagram, tattoo artist Tay Nicole Clinch shared a bit of background about Meredith’s decision to get a cremation tattoo, which is when the tattoo ink is mixed with a loved one’s ashes.

Technically....bikes are 'vehicles' so yeah...you can get a DUI for biking while drunk, at least in Canada, I dont know about America, that place is a lawless wasteland at the moment.
Normally however, I dont think it ever really happens because they let cyclists get away with everything.
I've had a cycling enthusiast friend get caught twice and he was warned but never charged. But yeah, bikes are considered vehicles.
Despite not being licensed or insured. Kind of a weird double-standard.
That being said though, I re-iterate..."So what?"
Maybe they were drunk. They're on bikes. You're in a car. If you said something like they were so hammered that they were unpredictably weaving all over the road or something I'd consider that, of which however there has been no evidence mind you, but regardless of anything else he was still at fault.

You can’t get a DUI for riding a bike while drunk.

Only drivers operating a motor vehicle can be charged with impaired driving. However, if an officer sees that you are under the influence of alcohol, you can be fined under different charges.
Depending on where and how an officer identifies that alcohol is impacting your ability to cycle safely, an officer can charge you with (and not limited to) the following infractions:
intoxication in a public place
consuming alcohol not in a licensed establishment or residence (if a cyclist has open alcohol in public)
operating a bicycle in a careless manner

I think it varies from state to state and I saw on reddit (so grain of salt needed) that in NJ it isn't illegal to ride a bicycle while impaired.

Google tells me you can't receive a DUI on a bicycle in New Jersey.

It's a bad defense anyways. If the guy was sober and not driving reckless, and 2 cyclists weaved out in front of him he might have a case.
But he was intoxicated, driving a motor vehicle illegally. He illegally passed a vehicle in front of him on the passenger side, striking 2 cyclists who were in the correct position on the road.
There is literally no case here, it is black and white. He killed 2 people and is entirely his fault.

Typically accidents caused while on your bike are covered by home insurance, you can let that go now.
