I was 100% team tank. With the emergence of Wolf as a top goaltender, that simply isn't a realistic scenario anymore - and I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Maybe this iteration of the team ends up looking more like expansion year Vegas, than it does peak Tampa. Extremely deep at all positions, but maybe we only have a a superstar Goalie, and D-Man.

We had our big 4 prospects that remained under Treliving and while Pelletier was used in a deal to upgrade the team has graduated Wolf, Zary and Coronato who are now our #1 goalie and 2 top 9 forwards all with more upside.
In addition to that Conroy has restocked the prospect pool and it remains in better shape now than when he took it over. Some guys who are 30+ like Markstrom, Lindholm, Toffoli, and Tanev were all moved out for younger pieces like Bahl, Sharangovich, Frost, Farabee who combined with the 3 prospects that graduated have helped lower the age of this team.
If they could land Cozens they would have a pretty strong center group 1-4. No superstar elite but 3 guys with at least #2 ability and Backlund being a responsible bottom 6 option. With Wolf it is a bit tough to see multiple years picking high as he could single handily keep this team out of the basement.
This team is also posed to pick 2x 1st rounder for 3 straight drafts which will help keep the pool/asset base strong.
If they get Cozens though I think those hoping for a tankbuild will be left disappointed
|
Wolf - #1 goalie
Cozens - Top 6 centre
Zary/Corronato - Top 6 forwards
Parekh - Top paring D-man
That group alone is better than what the average "Tank" rebuild would produce. The tank is only to get you the difficult pieces. The rest has to be done with good asset management. Sure it'd be great to have a better quality centre in that group, but, even in a full blow tank, the odds of that happening aren't great. Even the #1 picks aren't guaranteed to be great: Slafkovsky, Lafreniere, and Hischier are all good players, but not the franchise style game changer.
The Flames prospect development is too good so far to allow them to draft a Bedard type.
The only issue with acquiring Cozens, is that I don't see how that happens without Andersson going the other way. There are likely a bunch of teams all throwing offers at Buffalo, and any lesser pieces the Flames move are likely to be outbid. Maybe Zary?

I would be more willing to trade Sharongovich than Zary. If they could trade Kadri or Anderson and use the return assets to get Cozens, that would be a win.

I doubt Sharagovich has that kind of value. The Flames acquired him on the cheap, as he was not progressing beyond that tweener role. He's now 26, turning 27, and hasn't done enough this year to increase his value.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Thats fair. They did however want someone who can play, but sounds like they're asking for a young C. Not sure you're getting that back for Cozens. Outside of maybe a Vancouver deal where Pettersson moves for a package. But no harm in asking.

As mentioned many many times flames don’t have the pieces to get cozens. Flames need to start concentrating on getting Weager a real partner. Even when Bahl comes back , weager will still have to play with 7-8th dman as his partner.

I think the only way we get him will be a package including a 1st this year and lower roster player and a prospect.
1st, 2nd, Rooney, Kerins?
BUF will eventually come to their senses. I can't imagine it will be a Pettersen' level player coming their way.

I think it would have to be a three team trade to be honest. I still think something that includes Cozens and Zegras makes the most sense for both teams, but I don't think Anaheim want's to take on Cozens contract...it's where the Flames could come in.
Anaheim: NJD 1st + ???
Calgary: Cozens (I'd take back Samuelsson from a cap perspective if Buffalo saw him as a dump)
Buffalo: Zegras (NY kid back to New York state)

They don’t need futures though. It’s why I think cozens just ends up staying there. Buffalo doesn’t have to trade him.

This makes the most sense to me. A 3rd team that values the futures that we have to offer is probably the only way this gets done. Unless we're willing to trade Kadri or Andersson, and Buffalo wants them.

they don't have to trade him but he's rotting away there. He isn't doing well and the team isn't doing well with him, they want to improve (I think, but you're never sure with them). If they can get players that will help now, they will. I think he has the potential to be an amazing player but being there in that culture would make anyone not enjoy playing.
No one is going to give fair value for him so they're going to have to accept something. I ireally think the Flames should find a way to get it done because I think he could be their #1C moving forward.

Cozens is a young centre....But yes, I don't see anyone giving up a better performing young centre for Cozens. Unless it's a smaller player in the 50-60 point range who is also slightly older. Maybe Zary?
Would love for the Flames to be on the recipient end of another Kakko type trade. Doubt that's happening though.

Trade Anderson for Cozens (more involved)
Cut Barrie
Call up Soloyov and Kuznetsov and see how it goes. I think both of these guys are ready.

Andersson has a m-ntc and will certainly have Buffalo on there. He wants to go to a contender (or stay in Calgary). The Sabers are a tire fire
