The weather wasn't bad when I took the flight.
It wasn't just the pilot, the front desk also said the same thing.
And whatever, they used the word taxi.
WJ sure as hell were very, very specific about why my flight back was delayed. I don't think "but reasons" does the job anymore with the gov't.

I'm sure you're right that the plane was late getting released from the hanger. I just bet that nobody knew that that specific plane was supposed to be used for that flight until just prior, after the original plane was swapped out 3 times. The tail you likely flew on wasn't even plan b in this case.

Wrong kind of tail

And sometimes not even that.

The Westjet part is a tad surprising considering Air Canada and Lufthansa are both parts of Star Alliance

I would imagine a lot of it had to do with the Westjet CEO's longtime position as a Lufthansa group exec before coming to Calgary.

15 year contract for all that work from WestJet to Technik, just good business. I'd also assume we'll see other airline tails here getting work done. It is somewhat mentioned in WestJet's press release:

The Calgary Airport Authority (The Authority) is proud to have signed a long-term lease agreement with Lufthansa Technik for an engine maintenance and test cell facility that will serve, amongst others, WestJet as a cornerstone customer.

Matters a lot less for things like maintenance. Delta has a huge maintenance operation that they do for other airlines not part of SkyTeam, including the now defunct Calgary-based Lynx Air who still owe Delta money.

I would imagine having the facility here has some other savings (eg ferry flights, less time out of service) that help out with the cost of a big long term contract.

Weather (winds specifically?) yesterday may have been the caused something I don't think I have ever seen at YYC before. AC 851 (LHR-YYC) landed on 35R simultaneously with WS 80 (YYC-NRT) departing opposite direction on 17R. Previous arrival (OCN76) landed on 29.

Wow, I had to check that out on the playback on Flightradar24 to see that.

I thought that was funny too. 80 was too heavy to depart 29. Not sure why AC landed 35R. They would have had a tailwind but the wind direction was changing quite a bit.

The wind was pretty much straight west at 250 degrees then, and pretty unique using opposite runways (17R and 35L) at the same time, in addition to the primary of 29.

Also, consider Japan for your winter holiday! Weather is 7C to 15C most days and with less tourists come cheaper prices and less waiting.
We went over xmas break and it was one of our best family holidays ever! Just don't get stuck over new years as a lot of stuff shuts down.
