Well, you have something in common with Tarantino.

I think he's been asked about that "kink" before, he doesn't answer and moves right past it.

I take back what I say about gladiator II as I subjected myself to the 2018 Robin Hood starring Kingsman and Jamie Foxx. Aggressively and confrontationally bad, no redeeming qualities at all. Everyone involved should be killed I'm sorry.

I watched a hell of a double feature yesterday; Snake Eyes and Sudden Death.

Snake Eyes is legit a great thriller with some amazing shots from De Palma. Plus Cage is at his best in this. During a heavy weight championship boxing match in Atlantic City the US Secretary of Defense is assassinated and a crooked cop (played by Cage) unravels the conspiracy.

Sudden Death is one of the better Die Hard rip offs from the 90s, it's pretty ridiculous but it's a lot of fun. Some terrorists break into the owners box and hold the vice president hostage during Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. Van Damme had a great run of action films in the 90s. Trivia time, how many former Flames are mentioned in Sudden Death.

Saturday Night was pretty good. It had a hectic pace and was a little self-serving in spots, but it was cast brilliantly and had a lot of laughs. JK Simmons as Milton Berle was particularly good.

The fact that Chevy Chase told Reitman he "should be embarrassed" after he watched the film tells you just how accurate it must be.

Gladiator 2 was okay, nothing special.

Only thing left to see if The Brutalist. If anyone knows where it's playing, please share.
Emilia Perez is on Netflix now. I thought it was very interesting, but it has been widely criticized by Mexicans and the queer community. The lead actress made many politically incorrect tweets that were discovered after the Oscar nominations. After receiving the most nominations (13), they may now not win any awards.

Adrien Brody is incredible in "The Brutalist", not a surprise though, he's always been great. I'm really glad I watched Brady Corbet's last movie to get familiar with his style, not for everyone and nothing is spoon fed. The pacing is slow, he takes his time which makes sense with the runtime. I didn't even get up during the intermission, just checked the cast list on imdb for some actors I didnt recognize.

Best Picture is determined by a ranked ballot.
Therefore, I kind of want to put money down on Conclave to win BP, like Spotlight.
It is likely number 2 on many of those lists as it's more universally liked than some of the others.

Gladiator 2 was terrible. I stopped watching with a half hour left. And I consider the original Gladiator to be in my top 5 movies all time. So I wanted to like it.

That is what I would imagine a Youtube Fanfic re-cut by a random would look like. The writing was embarrassing.

The CGI was really bad too. I don't even know why they wasted money making this. It was worse than I could have even imagined and I went in with low expectations.

They reused all the old music (why?). Flashbacks (in 2025, c'mon). The battle scenes were not even that great, the fight choreography was 10 notches below the last one.

Prologue writing? In a 3 hour movie? WTF are we talking about here. How can they make a movie this long and still have zero character development.

I am shocked Ridley Scott was actually the director on this.

Coward!

I watched all of Star Trek Section 31 and that was lukewarm dog####! Granted it took me about 2 days and considerable amounts of alcohol...but I finished it!

Get in there! You can finish it!

Dig in!!

I watched Wolfs on Apple TV. It is Clooney and Pitt in a spiritual sequel to Mr. Wolf from Pulp fiction (Clooney has the same license plate -1 number according to IMDB Trivia).

It was Clooney and Pitt playing Clooney and Pitt, but lacked much of the charm of their earlier movies. There was also a fair bit of "I'm an old man now" humor from Clooney, and Pitt taunting him about it... which is sort of funny on it's own given that Pitt is 61 and Clooney is 63.

6.5/10 feels about right.

Saw Ready Player One was on Netflix, so we watched that again last night. I enjoyed it the first time I saw it in theatres, and enjoyed it again last night. Definitely has some cheesy tropes, but still a great watch.

There's a reason one of the most heinous villains in The Sopranos thought Gladiator was a cinematic masterpiece.

And then you all went out and watched the "sequel" and frowned.

Watched Gladiator 2 last night.

What a waste of time. So glad I didn't go in theatres for this rehash of the EXACT same story line told in a worse way and with a worse actor.

Wtf you doing Ridley, you used to be so great.

I'm hoping that this was just pure appeasement for the execs who wanted to milk it.

I'd wager from Scots perspective that making Gladiator 2 funds his other projects he has on the go.

I'd like him to revisit the Crusades again. But, I'm sure he only has one or two movies left in him, he's not young.

They literally copied scenes to a t (and poorly) from the first movie.

There was one scene where 60% of the lines were lines pulled right from the first movie.

I shut it off then.

Apparently the spanish dialogue in that movie is laughably bad at many points, and while the premise is very interesting, the way it goes about executing the premise ends up evoking several central transphobic fears and talking points. The movie is literally about a very dangerous man who transitions and doesn't tell anyone, then the movie spends much of the runtime questioning whether he has truly changed...

Spoiler!

It's not JK-Rowlings-post-Potter -levels of bad. But even as just a cis person who happens to know quite a few trans people and is thus somewhat more familiar than average with the topic, it's an extremely cringe movie.

It also has some less obviously bad but equally problematic ideas about the process of transitioning. It also just gets some factual stuff wrong in a way that exposes the lack of background work in writing the script. (There's a whole song about how the main character smells the same after transition, even though changed body odour is one of the first noticeable change once someone starts taking hormones. It's one of those things you wouldn't necessarily learn with a quick google, so kinda not a biggie, but also immediately tells that no trans people read the script before production was already too far to make changes.)

Of course Mexico is also nothing but drug lords with a yellow filter, as always. The director has also called Spanish "the language of undeveloped countries, the poor and immigrants". Considering it's the second most common native language in the world that comment is just a really great way to get a lot of haters for your movie.

It's just one of those movies where someone wanted to do a movie about his favorite book, but clearly none of the central people involved in creating the story did anything more than the absolute bare minimum to actually understand the topics of the film, and kinda didn't give an F.

So a perfect example of an Oscar bait movie really.

Really hope it bombs, would not recommend. Also the musical numbers are pretty painful to sit through.

There is a very interesting theory/suggestion out there that the Academy should awarding movies from 5 years ago. To allow those smaller films to find their footing and to not get caught up in the current political / cultural climate. EDIT: also just to see which movies actually have lasting impact

It makes a ton of sense
