Zadorov was an expiring contract and headed for UFA when he was traded for a 3+5. When he was acquired he was an expiring contract but only an RFA. Flames got 3 years out of him at 3.75. Vancouver paid the 3+5 for 54 games.

Trading Kadri is a no brainer, he has 4 years left on a contract and maybe one real productive year left
Whether Mittlestadt is the right get is a different discussion

The idea is to get something for Kadri while he has value - he's 34, so he won't for long. But I agree that Mittelstadt is a less than exciting asset to get back.
I could have gotten on board with this, two months ago. But the team deserves to have them hold onto Kadri for now, plus, with the cap going up as much as it is, he probably still has some value next year.
I wouldn't hate the deal (if COL added), but I think they should table a Kadri trade until next year (unless Ritchie is involved)

Yeah I just don't see the appeal of Middlestadt overall. Unless you are trading Kadri purely to get out of the contract (no signs this is something the Flames are interested in) it's just a bad trade. He's just not that great. He's a one dimensional, undersized offensive player that now a second team is cutting bait on.

Giant front page image caught me off guard lol "FLAMES STILL INTERESTED IN COZENS"
https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/early-t...-trade~3074500
LeBrun says - Flames aren't going to let short term goals affect long term vision. Not going to spend big assets on rentals or pending UFAs. Looking at hockey trades. Flames remain "enamored" with Cozens, PLB not sure if the Flames have the pieces. Sabres don't want a futures deal. Buffalo looking for an apples to apples deal. That said, Cozens fits what he Flames want.
Nothing new here really. Frank said as much recently too.
My take? Like a lot of us have said, they might need a 3rd team in the mix somehow.

And why would we have to add to get mittelstadt? Hypothetically they would be the ones who want Kadri… plus they’re offering to trade a player they recently acquired which signals they’re unhappy with their decision.
If Colorado wanted Kadri in a mittelstadt deal, they’d have to add if conroy is playing his cards correctly.
But I don’t want mittelstadt. Kadri is great for us so why take a middling player for him? Just because mittelstadt is younger? Meh.

Wouldn't be shocked if Buffalo would take Mittlestadt in a Cozens deal.
We would need to add though.

I agree a 3 team trade is the only thing that makes sense for the Sabres.
Need a team with players the Sabres want and a need to clear cap space. Flames send cap space, picks/Prospects, Sabres get veterans from the third team and the Flames get Cozens.
If it is a summer move maybe Kadri is involved?

I could see a trade for Cozens working out closer to the draft. The perceived value of draft picks is at its highest around then so Conroy’s 2 first round picks might be at their highest value then. Buffalo says they don’t want futures for Cozens but that tune could potentially change when the draft is about to happen. Teams like to make picks when the opportunity comes. Draft picks are worth less right now and players are worth more but it flips for the brief period between the SCF and the draft.

I mean they just traded him away. I don't think they want him back. Particularly because they have way too many undersized forwards like him.

LeBrun isn't wrong, Craig is still very high on Cozens and has been for a long time but there's just no deal to be had between the two teams right now.
Buffalo wants Andersson as the main piece, likely Pospisil as well.
Andersson wont waive to go to Buffalo, he wants the Flames or a contender.
How does Calgary pivot into a hockey trade? What 3rd team comes into the mix?
Lots of teams are interested in Cozens, so its not unreal to hear that Calgary is still very much interested.

Mittelstadt is 6'1" and over 190 pounds lol. He may play like he's undersized, but he isn't.

Dont have that intimate of detail, but I know the two sides have talked significantly about what Rasmus's long term plan is.
In the summer it was leaning more so in moving on, within the last few months I'd say its now moved more in favor of staying.
With that said Craig knows Rasmus is his #1 value piece, the 2 sides need to figure out what the long term plan is.

Carson Soucy available in Vancouver. Would he fit well on the 3rd pairing? Upgrade on what we have?
