In any case, I truly think he's using this as a negotiating tactic to get favourable terms when he does want to bargain (I said bargain, not negotiate). He's a shrewd business man.
geopolitics isn't business though. In business he can declare bankruptcy, like he has six times before. If the United States of America declared bankrupcy it would be a zeitgeist the likes of which cannot be envisioned

Maybe? Yes?

And you can’t figure out why one response might be more emotional?

And then furthermore setting all the above aside are you even sure the Chinese aren’t reacting emotionally? Is there a Beijingpuck somewhere we can check the pulse where they communicate in English? Are you fluent in Mandarin? How the F do you know they aren’t reacting?
Keep in mind it was an additional 10% on China, since they’ve already been dealing with this since the first Trump go-around. I’m not sure if it was multiplied or (obviously worse) added.

The Chinese economy is used to very high growth rates that would make other countries blush. But I think they’ve peaked - not due to Trumpism, but simply because they don’t have the population growth they used to, and immigration isn’t that attractive there.

They said they would respond, and issued a bold statement. I didn’t see Xi Jinping on TV panicking hours after. They play the long game. They know this is over in 3 years 11 months. It’s not an earth shattering event for them because they are focused on 2125, not 2025.

Okay so you think Canada should play the long game and plan for 2105? Is that your argument? Personally I don’t think we would last that long in an economic war against the USA.

You know, sometimes emotional responses to things are warranted. Or do you not agree with this premise either?

I feel like whatever you’re arguing, which isn’t super clear what it is, is not being done so in good faith if you can’t think about some differences between Canada and China’s respective positions.

Why an 11 year old paper bag? And I’m pretty sure the LinkedIn account I’ve found of you says you’re a few chins past “fluttering away”. If it ends up being true of course. Should we play this game?

Oh, absolutely there are differences between their positions, but the same fate that befell Canada and Mexico this weekend is what China has been dealing with for years already. And they have an extremely powerful competitive advantage with respect to producing goods since their labor costs are so minimal. Morally wrong or not is a different argument.

Emotional responses can be good or bad. I can’t control mine. I cry a lot even when people instruct me not to…(?) But that’s why you have a group of people in a room. Think it through. Is banning orange juice truly going to make your life better, or is it a political display?

Don’t get into an economic war with the USA. Wait this out and build infrastructure to expand your options. Punishing Canadian consumers because Donald Trump is crazy is crazy itself.

Guy keeps going on about "panicking" and "emotional responses", but that isn't what this is. Panicking and emotion responses is what trump does on his knock off Twitter.

It’s ‘14, isn’t it? I don’t have a LinkedIn account so I suggest you refrain from embarrassing yourself by saying horrible things about someone who doesn’t even post here.

We shall see, hopefully the chamber of commerce doesn’t do too much scrubbing online.

You’re being an online weirdo. Come over and sit at the table to talk to me if you’re that upset.

Are you still fooling yourself into thinking there was ever a way to avoid this? ffs this has nothing to do with drugs or migrants, this is Trumps plan to pay for the US government while dropping income tax by tariff income (essentially a US wide sales tax which of course hurts the low income folks worst), is it nuts and will it tank the global economy? of course but he is looking for a reason to put tariffs on every country in the world and there was never any way to avoid it

At this point, and I can't believe I'm having to say this, we need to hope for a 15 or 20% loss on the markets over the next week or so, that is the only real chance to avoid this, massive rapid losses to the dumb fat septic's 401k's

20%?! You want to put 1000 CHF on it? (Just to be neutral)

That video is great. It's beyond shameful that this current U.S. administration is so hellbent on stabbing us in the back and throwing away 100+ years of friendship and cooperation between our two nations. There's a special place in hell for these a**holes.

Instead of spewing Trumpian claims, would you like to have a civil argument?

I expect that I'll be watching the US markets tomorrow, things are pointing to an average 3 point loss which like a trillion dollars will be wiped out. If anything turns the tides on Trump it might be pressure from the US banks.

Mark Carney is suggesting that this is an opportunity for us to increase trade with other countries who are focusing on climate change like Canada. We're facing an existential crisis to our economy and he is worried about carbon still?

God helps is all.
