It's not a loaded draft, although picks 1-10 ae pretty good. It thins out pretty quickly after pick 15, and the second round is considered very weak.

Bring in a legitimate top 4 dman (who is a bit underrated) in Pettersson and a bottom 6 guy that I kind of like in O'Connor.

And it really costs a 1st to do those things, that's not the worst. I thought that with a lack of dmen on the market this year Pettersson might get a 1st on his own.
But the optics of the whole thing really make this a head scratcher for Vancouver since they seem set on trying to make a push this year.
I guess if they re-sign M. Pettersson it maybe okay but giving up a potential protected first next year is risky.

I agree with what you're saying. And I agree that flipping the first to help the team now is what they needed to do. But the fact is that Hughes, Pettersson, Boeser and Demko are in their primes, and Miller is near the end of his prime. Their time is now.
And what did they do yesterday?
They traded away their #1 C, and leader. And what did they get for that? A middle 6 C with concussion issues, and they upgraded on Desharnais (a fair bit) and Heinen (a little bit, if at all). Whipdy-effing-do.
Their best player is having a career year, and possibly a Hart Trophy year. Their entire core is in their primes, yet they are in serious jeopardy of not making the playoffs. They are a worse team today than they were yesterday. And it sounds like the locker room issues aren't over.

They really traded a 1st for first dibs to badly overpay Pettersson in free agency so to me the value is kind of poor.

Another Pettersson. I feel like the Canucks are just trolling their broadcast team at this point.

Pettersson would be an upgrade on Soucy. Mancini is the guy they're hoping upgrades Desharnais (another big body defenseman who is a borderline NHL player). O'Connor vs Heinen is basically a wash.
The biggest thing they got out of this is cap space, now and in the future. They can use it at the deadline to try to get into the playoffs (stupid, IMO) or to set themselves up better for next year. Cap space is important, especially when your team is about to have a $5m dead cap hit for 2 seasons.
The problem is that they are now essentially forced to sign Marcus Pettersson. Better hope his contract demands aren't unreasonable, or this is a disaster.

IMO cap space should be used to retain your best players and only be used sparingly in free agency. Spending $$$ in free agency is usually bad business.

Boeser and MPettersson are going to cost more than $15M. My guess is Boeser is around the $10M mark, and MPettersson will cost $7-8M. There goes the cap room they acquired.
(though honestly, I think Boeser walks)

I agree but I don’t know if they can let Boeser walk as they will be thin on forward talent.

They would be in full rebuild mode - which they can't do, because of Hughes. So they HAVE to pay him, or grab someone similar in free agency - which is the same thing.
They have royally screwed themselves.

They'll keep Boeser past the deadline and lose him for nothing when they miss the playoffs.

In the end though...this is part of why I want to move Andersson sooner rather than later.
I think Andersson has more value than Pettersson but their 5v5 stats and performance the last 3 seasons is super similar, and I worry if the Flames wait too long and then have to move him next deadline this is the type of return you could be looking at.

I'd imagine there's a handful of party-goers from last night waking up this morning and realizing it was in fact not Elias Pettersson being traded to the Pens.

Defensive metrics are similar, but Andersson has much more offense to his game. And it's the offense that creates value.
Tanev is a God, but didn't get us a 1st because - no offense.

If I am a Canuck fan I am not sure what I want the team to do? If they continue to plummet they could flip M.Pettersson and Boeser as solid rentals and make the call to do a full rebuild in the summer by flipping Pettersson and Hughes? They could sell the rentals and retool in the summer around Hughes and Pettersson? They might stay the course and walk these guys to free agency or double down on all of them and sign both players to long term deals.
Pretty crazy how quickly the Canucks have turned into a tire fire.

Points wise it's similar at 5v5 too, but Andersson a much better goal scorer.
5v5 points:
Pettersson: 71 points in 197 games
Andersson: 69 points in 207 games
5v5 goals:
Pettersson: 8 goals
Andersson: 21 goals
PP points:
Pettersson: 0 points in 39 minutes
Andersson: 39 points in 520 minutes.
The main thing being I'm not sure Andersson is super effective on the PP, and on lots of teams acquiring him he's probably not going on PP1.

It's almost like a click-bait just to have Pettersson's name on the title. Almost like the Flames having the less skilled siblings.
