But Atkins and Shapiro weren't going to sign nobody and had no idea how to sign a free agent...
The media and fan base losing their minds after Soto and Burnes didn't sign in Toronto was just hilarious, and just ignored that those two guys were always going to be unlikely to sign here and being in the conversation was a good sign that the org was willing to spend.
But nope just twisted into them being unable to close a deal.

It’s weird. The Jays truly felt like they were forever bridesmaids after Ohtani, Soto, Sasaki and Burnes. The last two off seasons felt miserable.
But they have quietly went and acquired Gimenez, Hoffman, Santander, and Scherzer and I kind of just have to laugh. That’s a pretty good offseason. Those are 4 all stars LOL

Sherzer wants to win. He's repped by Boras.
Both Alonso and Bregman are also repped by Boras.
Hmmm

If Rogers goes "screw it" we are all in and sign Scherzer, Alonso, and Bregman that would be hilarious

Jays are assembling the worse team 300 million can buy !
But hey it’s just money and Rogers has no shortage of it

Jays underperformed last year. I can see a rebound but to what degree. New coaches. Gausman pitches better. Bo rebounds. Springer might be better. Bp was wrecked and taxed by early injjuries. Now scherzer. Santander.
Lets be optimistic! It's sometimes do negative can't be a flames forum.

Just the bullpen alone was unfathomable. They went from pretty highly ranked to worst in the league by a lot. I think it was a 5 WAR negative swing.
And yeah, Bo too. Those two entities alone bouncing back is another 6 to 8 WAR probably.

All the Sports are happening tonight.
Solid pickup in Scherzer. Excellent. He's a great dude with the right attitude. Hopefully he plays more than 43 innings but he's there for intangibles.
As mentioned above, he likely chose here because of what else might be coming (Alonso). Rogers sweet $15M doesn't hurt either.

Its another odd signing, pitcher is 40 turning 41,
Had lots of injuries the past season
He is the type of pitcher that is 5th starter, where the Jays have to hope they get half a season.,,,
As mentioned, who cares if they don't worry about the luxary tax
This might be more about pleasing an agent, trying to snag another of his players

I do think it's interesting this hasn't been officially announced yet...something more to come from the Blue Jays and Boras that they are waiting for perhaps.

Depth signings cost money in baseball.
Pitchers can be good in their 40s look at Jesse Chavez look at rich hill. We dont need a star. 15 mil . He is winner too . Might be a trade deadline candidate at worst. Adds Depth. deepema the bullpen. We will have injuries we needed this. Unfortunately most ppl don't want to play in Toronto. It's one season. Him and bassitt both off books next year we can take a run at a top pitcher. Manoah will be back. Cross fingers no injuries. Tiedeman next year back. Matoudis (high on him) . Barriera yesavage and few others knocking. Some pitching coming literally i feel
Look at Nelson cruz another example.
Turner not all bad.

Projections still love Sherzer.
When he's healthy he might be the Jays best starter. The question is how much time will he miss.

I’m not so concerned. Traditionally the Jays aren’t a team to wear down starters. If anything they baby them too much. I’m sure part of the deal is to give him time off where needed. We have an astute pitching coach so I have little doubt they’ll do the right thing.

I would think, when healthy at this stage he is their 4th / 5th starter,
Not a bad thing, basically adds depth

70% of this is for his attitude, professionalism and experience in the club house and on the bench. 30% is actually for his pitching ability. Of course hope he stays healthy but even if he's in and out of the rotation he's going to be a guy that contributes in some fashion.

Don't forget marketability.
I would pay to go see Max one more time. People will make trips to Toronto from around the country to see him pitch

I believe in the Jays.
|
Well... no one should expect vintage Max Scherzer carving the #### out of opposing hitters. The man is on the wrong side of 40, but he's still Max Scherzer and even at 40 years of age will be at least as good as a generic #4/5 starter. Plus it's fun! The Jays have lacked fun the last few years so I'm gonna enjoy this swain song from a no doubt 1st ballot hall of famer.
Jays are still gonna need to get lucky to make the playoffs but this team looks like it'll be more enjoyable to watch at least.

AL team projected WAR after the Scherzer signing:
1. NYY - 48.7
2. BAL - 46.1
3. TEX - 45.9
4. MIN - 45.2
5. HOU - 45.0
6. TOR - 43.1
7. SEA - 42.2
8. TBR - 41.3
9. BOS - 41.2
On paper at least, the Jays seem to have pulled themselves into the playoff conversation. Hopefully they can still add one more solid bat, although the improvement on a per cost basis may be only minor. Would likely raise the floor though.

Oh, they're not contenders until they sign a power bat at LF, or 3B. Their SP looks pretty solid, especially the bottom. But we need a person who can get on base and homer often. Alonso seems to be that best fit right now.
