Why are fans pining for a 27yo 4th line Center?

I like you Scorp but your player evaluation is not your strongest suit.

Also not sure anyone is pining for this guy per se, just improvements anywhere for a small cost.

Trading a pick in any round for a middle-aged (by NHLer standards) 4th line C just seems like the kind of move a contending team makes, not a rebuilding bubble team.

Scorp might actually have a point, though. Kunin's underlying results throughout his career--even team-relative--are quite poor. Might even be worse than Rooney's.

Freely available info:
Conroy is actively shopping for a RHS center (priority is under 25 and has term left) of any kind.

Flames have zero RHS centers. And overall depth is weak to the point where Kevin Rooney is playing below league level and still has a roster spot. And wingers have been slotted in after Zary got injured to play center.

Flames need a bit more grit in the bottom 6 FW group.

Flames have a total of 2 RHS FWs in the FW group. And one of them has been benched for weeks at a time.

Whether you as an individual believe handedness doesn't really matter, it obviously matters to the Flames and around the league.

When you're looking around the league at available players that remotely fit any of the needs the Flames have openly admitted to having, you see what available and potentially at a reasonable cost.

Kunin, to me at least is the happy medium of affordable and providing a couple of needs the Flames have (RHS, decent FO%, has some grit and isn't slow).

Hes literally middle of the road on a list potentially available players.

Edit: and responding to a poster who has inside infor about SJ saying the Flames are kicking tires on his potential availability. So it's not fans pining, it's fans responding positively to the Flames looking at players.

Would be a stupid move to make for the Flames. Our picks are more valuable even a 7th rounder.

The RHS center list of possible acquisitions isn't pretty for the next year or two. So really the Flames are gonna go dumpster diving at some point. Kunin isn't the worst of the litter.

Earlier this week I opined about a stop gap option of Kunin and Cody Glass. If they can't get the guy they really want and aren't drafting high, they gotta get something.

Well this isnt true, he already has 11 goals this season and had 11 last year

Only players we should be looking at should be in the draft unless a superstar like Makar is available.

If Kunin could be had for a 6th or 7th round pick then sure.

But with the lack of centers on the market and with him having a bit of a strong year with 11 goals he's probably going to warrant a 3rd...and I'd want no part of moving a 3rd for him.

I am suprised he's only 27 though, feels like he's been around forever.

Also dude has a 37.3% xGF this year which is -6.42 relative so bad for San Jose even...probably should stay away from him TBH. He likely is taking a lot of the heavy minutes in his line with Goodrow to help shelter Smith/Celebrini a bit but still if it costs more than a 5th I'd stay away.

While i agree, we shouldn't be trading picks in the 1-4th rounds for 4th liners, the rest of this is a pretty ridiculous take. If Conroy does share your opinion here, which i HIGHLY doubt he does, he should be gone ASAP. There could be a ton of value between those two extremes of draft eligible players and Makar. To suggest Conroy is not/should not be looking at anyone in this group is laughable.
