By no means a tax lawyer or expert, but my guess is the CRA has a vastly different set of rules than the IRS on those sorts of complications. Ohtani probably spent a lot of money on tax lawyers to make sure it would all go around, set up the various corporate shells etc for the maximized tax savings, and the familiarity with those same tax lawyers for knowledge of the CRA rules is probably different or non-existent.
A ton of opt outs for Alonso sounds good on paper for both sides, but probably a lot of teams offer that. Why would would be pick Toronto to do that exercise, outside of course $ offered?
He doesn't want to leave the Mets and wants eventually a price of the pie that Soto got.
But if he's that upset, I can see him spite the Mets by going to the Yankees as a trade for the Soto swap, on one of those multiple opt out deal the Jays are offering.
|
The Yankees don't really have a spot for Alonso this year with Goldschmidt at 1B and Stanton at DH.

Steve Cohen said the Mets will most likely move forward without Alonso. I wonder if its posturing, or do the Jays actually have a shot in signing him?

The Mets are just going to trade for Vladdy after he turns down the Jays last offer before Spring Training

So if the Mets are out, and a lot of other teams are out where else could he go? The Jays are a definite possibility.

My guess the Mets are not out, owner is simply pushing the agent,
Next move is the player

If the Jays are really after Alonso, it would be best not to extend Vladdy yet. In fact, they'd be better served if they float some rumours that he won't extend. That would probably make the Mets think they have a shot at him and not sign Alonso.

Is that really wise to play with your most marketable asset?
Sign Alonso or don't but don't play games with Vladdy. That feels like bad juju.

Sounds like Alonzo really wants to be back with the Mets but they can’t agree on a value. With the Boras critique becoming public, I’d guess ownership is annoyed at the negotiation tactics and are nearing their end with Boras. Boras probably doesn’t care as nothing bothers him. In any case, I hope they royally mess those negotiations and he falls to the Jays.

My guess is that the Jays and Alonso have a deal in place, but Alonso wants to go back to the Mets, and is taking the Jays deal to the Mets and saying match this deal or at least come close and I will sign with the Mets, the Mets are saying no, sign this deal. I am guessing it will come to a head soon, it could go either way at this point.

Either way as in either the Mets come close to the jays offer and he signs with the Mets or the Mets stick to their guns and he signs with the Mets.

I doubt Boras would let that happen, just like Bregman and the Astros.

Foreshadowing to the Jays backing up the Brinks truck and signing Vladdy to a long term deal....we fans rejoice! And then 3 years from now Vladdy goes back to hitting into a douuble play every other at bat and we fans complain about the signing. I can't wait!

Jays have 2 players on MLB Pipelines Top 100, 87. Arjun Nimmala and 88. Trey Yesavage. Orelvis Martinez is also the 10th ranked 2B prospect.
Nimmala is a 19 year old SS they drafted 20th in 2023. Scouting Grades: Hit:45, Power: 60, Run: 50, Arm: 60, Field: 50, Overall: 55. He hit 17 HR between R and A, his average was only .232, so he probably needs to refine his approach.
Yesavage is a 21 year old RHP they drafted 20th in 2024. Scouting Grades: Fastball: 60, Curveball: 50, Slider: 60, Splitter: 60, Control: 50, Overall: 55. On stuff he should've gone much higher in the draft, but teams had medical concerns so he dropped.

If Yesavage stays healthy he's should climb the MiLB ladder very quickly.
Considering how many of our higher end SP prospects went under the knife last season I suspect he'll be shut down for TJS by June lol

Nightengale is reporting Blue Jays made a six year offer to Bregman. Supposedly the six year offer from the Astros is still on the table but IDK if true.

Getting our hopes up for Bregman and Alonso only to have both go back to Houston and the Mets probably.
If the Jays got both of those guys they're probably a 90+ win team if the pitching doesn't crater.

That would laso put them at a $300M payroll which seems unlikely. That's the highest luxury tax apron.
