I’m going with Rutherford smashing his phone when he heard the news that Avs swept in.

Geez looking at that Avs retooled roster have to think they are circling back more seriously on Kadri.

The Flames being in a playoff spot makes me seriously doubt they are looking to trade any key players off their roster right now. At least not for futures anyways.

I could see there being truth to the Kadri for Middlestadt rumors. Colorado doesn't have to give Rantanen 14M a year now and can easily fit Kadri.
Calgary doesn't have to make this deal though so they have all the leverage. Colorado would be adding a pretty solid sweetener, like Ritchie or a first.

Yep. His coaches have all loved Miller*, and he’s one of the most popular guys in the room. The problem is that he rubs some players the wrong way. He’s basically like a demanding, emotional coach - he gives the team a big lift, but he has a shelf life because some guys start tuning him out.
It has become a problem in Van because they have a quiet room and one of their other stars is really sensitive. Miller would not be a problem on a team that already has vocal leadership.
*Tocchet loves Miller, and his comments that important players on the team don’t bring enough emotion to the game were clearly aimed at Petterson. Boudreau also loved him and said he’s like having another coach in the dressing room.

Not sure why the Flames would want to trade Kadri, a guy who is going to get you 25 goals and 55-60 points for the rest of his contract and is good in the dressing room for anything beyond a big overpay. You won’t be able to find that type of production for that cost on the open market.

Why would Kadri want to leave? Family is settled in a great city for the next four years, maybe permanently, money is set, team on the rise and he’s a leader on the team. He’s holding all the cards.

I wonder what the Canes tabled for Pettersson on top of Necas. Funny they missed their chance to trade Miller

It all depends on if he really wants another cup or not. He may think Col gives him best shot at that. He might be happy in CGY and doesn't want to leave.
If he allows the trade to happen I think it makes sense for both teams it what I was getting at.

Something to consider as well is how tight this group of flames are at this point. I think it was Kelly Hrudey who said a few weeks ago that this is the closest group he has seen since covering the flames. That sounds like a good work environment for Kadri as well as any player. His family is all here and, by all accounts, he loves living here.
So it’s a team that’s winning, is in a playoff spot, is a tight group and could be considered to have a bright future with all the young talent on the way. Kadri is also considered a leader on a team for likely the first time in his NHL career. Which most players appreciate.
All that sounds like a situation where a player would not want to leave. Colorado probably has a better chance at a cup but I bet they are not feeling as good as a team right now as the flames are.

Anyone else getting a little tired of the term ‘overpay’. How about ‘return’.
Seriously, what does ‘overpay’ even mean? To me it sounds like an unreasonable ask. No GM is going to do that in their right mind.
Not directed solely at you AG but I think it’s time to retire this tired fanboy term that basically has no meaning outside the realm of the absurd.

Colorado has the 2 best players in hockey and made a business decision to move on from Rantanen and give the team some rope. I think they feel just fine. They got a goalie now as well.
I think Colorado would be on a very short list of teams he waives for. It also makes sense for the Flames as well if we get some good futures back along with Mittlestatdt to plug the hole.

Yeah, 'overpay' is fan code for 'I don't like that player as much as the Gm does'. Okay fine - just say that.

After the Colorado trade, they are not a big contender for the cup. The Flames probably have a better chance now in the next 5 years.
Maybe I'm just overreacting but you don't trade a Rantanen.

I get the feeling the Flames aren’t going to make any big moves and want to see how things play out with the current group. If they make the playoffs great for the youngsters.
I think they will be reshaping things in the offseason though. Kuzmenko, Barrie, Hanley most likely be gone. Figuring out Sharangovich and Vladar will be another priority. I think they have tried out their farm team depth. My guess is one or two young D come up. I also think they will bring in a free agent scorer. Not sure on Vladar.
