Salary cap survivor. They cannot afford someone who makes more money than him and thus he continues on.

Maybe his advanced stats are good for a 4th liner?

Pelts is such a wonderful little sparkplug for us and I love his infectious energy. He clearly needed to regain some lost confidence in the AHL after last year, so I'm happy things worked out the way they did.

Having a RH center in Schwindt would be handy, even though he'll probably top out as a replacement level NHLer. Him and Rooney are probably pretty close to equivalent so having another right shot in the forward group would have been nice.

His potential as a middle 6 forward that had some offensive skill was always there and happy to see him flourishing now.
What was short-sighted?
How they handled Pelts?
If that's what you mean, it kind of seems like it was handled correctly, no?

If you mean Schwindt, then maybe, but cannot say for sure yet...

My biggest knock on Pelletier before was that he would get knocked off the puck too easily. He seems to be getting past that this season.

Pelts was like this before his injuries as well. It's amazing what a good long stretch of healthy games can do for a player. Hope he keeps rolling.

It felt like an unnecessary risk to take at the time for an expected bottom 10 team. Why not give the kid a couple months in the NHL to figure it out before putting him through waivers.

It worked out and rekindled Pelletier’s game, but he very much could have and should have been claimed. Maybe it was the right move and he wouldn’t have figured it out if he didn’t go down to the Wranglers, but the team certainly got lucky.

How they handled Pelts...

I don't think he should have been on waivers. Flames just got lucky that another GM didn't take him.

The guy we're seeing now is the guy he's always been, except for his injury plagued season.

He was awful in camp.
I think it's fair to ask if he finds his game if he's getting few minutes up with the big club and in and out of the lineup.

There was luck for sure. But they took a calculated risk and now they have a good player. It seems odd to criticize how it was handled when it worked out.

It's similar to those that use Wolf's strong performance to argue that the Flames were holding him back.

Of course yes it was true that if one team had claimed him, they would have lost the player. But again, they took a calculated risk and they were right.

Part of the calculated risk is that you have a better chance of getting someone through waivers when the entire league is doing the same and trying to get to roster compliance.

So you can play it out. If they had decided to keep him
- He could have played and found his game eventually.
- He could have not found his game and been waived. At that state he clears, and maybe finds his game, or doesn't in the minors. Or he doesn't clear, which I would say is a higher chance when he is available outside the start of season window.

They must have thought through all those scenarios and made a call. Seems like it was the right one.

He also didn't look that good on his extended look the previous season as well. Most teams had a guy like Pelletier when he was waived.

Seems like the Flames place a bit too much emphasis on preseason under Conroy in my view. If you are picking a guy like Rooney over Schwindt and deciding to keep up Honzek over waiver-eligible Pelletier you could take a step back and ask if you're placing too much weight on an 8 game sample in September and early October

You are assuming it is only based off of 8 games and not the play the previous season

I really don't get the consternation over this move. They sent down a player struggling after an injury, he went on to find his game in the lesser league and then brought him up where he is excelling after finding his game again. Seems like the kind of tough decision a good GM would make to me.

100%

He didn’t have it when he got sent down. The Flames weren’t the only ones to know so either, he went unclaimed.

I mean yeah, you could say we got lucky that nobody claimed him, but it was a calculated risk. We also got lucky he found his game again, or, you know, the Flames knew what was best for his development and put him on that path.

To me this is an example of great management and long term vision. It’s literally the opposite of being short sighted.

Also, if a team put in a claim they would have had to keep him on the NHL roster and if they could not make room for him in their top 9 then he likely continues to struggle in 4th line minutes.

Then, if that other team tries to send him down to find his grove in the minors, then the Flames would be able to claim him back and put him on the Wranglers.

But they could afford a different league minimum player. I don't remember seeing anything that was NHL caliber with Schwindt.

The timing was as safe as possible too. It was when not too many teams were looking for players - they were evaluating their own.

Sorry, but all actions and results seem to suggest they handled it correctly.

He did not show well at camp, he cleared waivers, he worked on his game and improved, and now he seems to be doing well.

The only better option is if they did not send him down, and he performed as he is now earlier in the season, but I saw nothing to suggest that, nor did the Flames, or apparently any other team so as to pick him up off of waivers.
