Oiler fans are right when they argue it's low risk move, it is. It's not a big financial commitment and it's only one year. If he sucks, sit him. I get that.
The issue other fans see is that this move is just needless. The Oilers already have enough offense. There's no need for an all offense, zero defense defenseman. You have two elite superstars in their prime, and a team that can score a lot of goals, a better idea would be to shore up the goaltending and load up now on solid defensive blueliners. But hey, if bringing in arguably the worst defensive d-man in the league is your jam, go for it. It's pretty much the opposite of what they need though.

BTW, this puts Edmonton over the max roster size, though they are technically compliant because of Kane being on LTIR. They can't bring anyone else in without moving someone, barring more injuries.

Nah, he’d play if he’s capable, that’s what the giving him a shot is all about, but you use him in a targeted way. 11 and 7 would allow you to do that.

I get the oilers aren’t your team so I wouldn’t expect you to see how the coaching staff is very good now at helping their Dman grow into becoming responsible defensive players. Since knoblauch and Coffey took over they’ve moulded a few guys that were somewhat castaways, Desjarnais comes to mind last year, now Emberson is following suit. I think it’s also some to do with Ekholm and Kulak too being leaders as well. Whether they can help Klingberg who is defensively challenged I dunno.

You don't need to be an Oilers fan to know a terrible defensive d-man is not what they need at all. It's a great way for them to make winning more difficult in the playoffs though so I'm all for it.
If the coaching staff is so great then why did Bouchard get walked like a pylon a couple days ago? They've had lots of time to work with him and he's still really bad defensively.

Desharnais is hardly a castaway, he was their own pick.
Emberson is worse this year than he was last year in San Jose.

Was that in the game he scored the winning goal against the Avs? My point is there are no perfect players, and mistakes like that play you speak of, are solely on the player. Bouchard’s blunders are usually big and costly, but they are the exception not the rule. And his positives exceed his glaring defensive lapses. He’s also tends to step his game up come playoff time, which is what I care about most as a fan. I think the coaching staff has done a good job with him overall.

Yes he scored, I thought we were discussing defensive play? There's a reason he's not on Team Canada, he can rack up points but he's so bad defensively they cannot depend on him.
To sum up:
Bounchard bad defensively
Klingberg really bad defensively, and they don't need him
The Oilers coaching staff cannot fix either player

Ekholm is the only legitimate defender on that squad

Since they signed klingberg, put him on IR, and treated him to nachos and the official terry jones buffet, does this increase their ability to spend money at the deadline?

This doesn't affect their cap - it's IR, not LTIR. It does affect roster size limit.

Players on IR don't count against the cap? I did not know that.

They do count. Putting him on IR doesn't buy them any cap space. If he was on LTIR, they could exceed the cap to replace him.

They do - that's my point - it's not cap management to put him there,
