Isn't Backlund a second half of the season guy? I feel like the "Backlund is cooked" happens every year around this time

Well he's going to be 36 in a few months and it's not really unexpected that he's declining. Just because some players can maintain a high level into their late 30's I think that's more the exception than the norm. At the back of this decade I think we are going to see a lot of teams with players that still have significant money and years owed and are pretty well cooked.

At 5v5 Backlund still leads the team in xGF at 54.4% and GF% at 61.1 % (22 GF vs 14 GA) while continuing to get the toughest matchups.

His decline seems overstated because his points are lower on a team that doesn't score, so everyone's points are lower.

Not sure I agree.

He's still at the top of the team in play driving, and his metrics year over year are basically flat.

He's always been a 40 point player with 15 points in the first half and 25 in the second, and that might be sliding. But even that not so much when you see the team is down 15% in scoring year over year.

But any guy that wants to year to year after this deal and can make sure nothing bad happens when he's on the ice has room on my team.

Backlund has the hardest zone starts on the team, with the highest level of opposing forwards and has the best possession stats of anyone on the team by a large margin at even strength.

He might be even better this year than he was last year. Every time Coleman or Coronato or any of his linemates this year are separated for them, their possession stats crater.

He is aging like a fine wine and is an excellent player.

I have no idea where you are getting that opinion from.

Going after Backlund is asking for an argument

Bizzare. Backlund gets the hardest matchups and still pushes the play the other way with rookies on his wing and some want him gone.

Andersson on the other hand has had his play decline in his mid 20's the last 3 years and some want to give him a retirement contract.

I know which player I want to keep.

I'd selfishly love to see Backlund break the Flames games played record.
Given that he stays healthy he will have a crack at it two seasons from now.

I think the thing with Backlund is that he's more of a great 3rd line center than he is 2nd line center at this point. Which is not a bad thing at all, that's the role he fills on this team now with Zary supplanting himself into being a top 6 center.

His scoring has declined slightly but I don't think his overall play has dipped very much

What we need is a young top six center to take the pressure off the older centers.

He also is a smart, level-headed guy who could roll into long-term player development and management. Backlund's going to get his cup with Calgary, just probably not as a player.

Sportsnet with an interesting JTMiller potential landing spot this morning. Columbus.

Miller is from Ohio. Article mentions Provirov as a piece coming back but wonder if the Canucks would want to find a way to include Kent Johnson, who is a lower mainland product.

Would be a smart move for Vancouver to get Johnson IMO. Bold move for Columbus. They are in the thick of the race for the playoffs with a bunch of teams.
