I live in Ottawa and the local pundits all think Mews is headed to the NCAA next year. Hence one of the main reasons he was traded to Sudbury from the 67s when they could have kept him for another year.

People are saying that Mews will be going to the NCAA next season putting into question the timeline for when he decides to go pro.

I wonder how many players who don't like the team they were drafted for gong to the NCAA from the CHL to exploit the loop hole.

CHL needs to renegotiate with the NHL/AHL.

If all of these drafted players are going to be able to go from the CHL to NCAA at 19 anyways, then why prevent them from going to the AHL.

For the CHL it's better because it would give more incentive for players to sign NHL deals, which would eliminate their NCAA eligibility, and they could still be assigned back to the CHL if they don't stick in the AHL for the full season at 19.

And optically it's a lot better to be losing players to the AHL instead of the NCAA as competition.

If that CHL/NHL/AHL transfer agreement isn't renegotiated by the end of this year then the CHL leadership just isn't very smart.

That is what the guys on TSN 1200 thought in Ottawa. That would be most unfortunate for the Flames if that is the case.

Apparently college rules apply if they move to college.

So if Mews or Jamieson went to college next season (2025-26), then the calculation for their rights would default to the Flames having them until Aug. 15, 2029.

If that is true, then that is actually better. 2029?

Highly unlikely a guy like Mews would hold out until he is 23 years old to sign if he keeps progressing.

Michigan is one of those big programs that could put together a Wrecking Crew of top CHL talent.

Doubt this very much. All of their NIL money is going towards football and basketball.

Whatever money they make is much much more than you would make in the CHL. It would just be a natural for a guy like McKenna to go NCAA and pick up a couple million in NIL money in ads up in Canada.

DO you mean next season? He looks to be a straight to NHL player after his draft.

Yes, next season if I was McKenna I would go NCAA and make some money and then go NHL the season after.

Some NBA prospects before NIL came into play did that. Sorry I meant go overseas not NCAA.

Makes a ton of sense. Go NCAA for a year get some money, go #1 overall and start getting NHL money. Hypothetical is he could back to the NCAA if the NIL money is in the millions, and sign his ELC and burn a year by playing a game.

I guess when you look at a Mews, how much would he earn from NIL? Would it be enough for him to pushback signing his ELC unless he gets those bonuses and year burnt off his contract.

Didn't someone here post that Canadians can't collect NIL revenue?

Canadians on a F1 visa cannot earn NIL money. US CHL players can.

I actually think Mews' going NCAA after this season is ideal. It's the best route for his development, in my opinion.

Canadians can make NIL revenue, they just have to make the content or cut the commercials on Canadian soil. It is why Aaliyah Edwards signed with Aadidas Canada when she played for UConn. A guy like McKenna should go NCAA, ideally in Michigan because he can easily get to Toronto to make the Canadian NIL money.

They get nothing from the team NIL pot while in the US. Your argument is so thin it only has one side.

Until they update the rules for these visas, NIL is a non-factor for foreign students.
