So the Oilers decide to let Foegele, McLeod, Desharnais and Ceci go, and replace them with Arvidsson, Skinner, Stecher and Emberson. And they make no attempt to replace Kane, and in fact they purposefully try to keep him out of the lineup for the entire season. They get smaller, softer, and older. By design, and by choice.

Then, they discover that McDavid is having to fend for himself more.

And now, somehow, they conclude it's the league's fault.

What I have trouble with is when they say McDavid is standing up for himself.

If McDavid took a two handed slash and responded with a cross check to the face, that would be standing up for himself.

The guy was holding him. You could argue it was interference. Is the appropriate response to a hold a violent crosscheck to the face? That isn't standing up for yourself. That is losing your cool and resorting to violence.

He is an absolute embarrassment to his city, his craft, and himself.
