I was thinking about this "star player" argument and how it applied to Mr. Kassian's actions.

There’s definitely a precedent set. McDavid has to fight next time he plays Vancouver because of “the code”. And if you argue that Tkachuk had to fight because he wasn’t penalized for his hit on Kassian during the game (and rightly so), then MacDavid has to fight his next game against Minnesota.

This is just so bizzare. I don't remember anything like this ever. This Canadian media infatuation with McDavid has gone far beyond what we have ever seen. It never happened with Crosby but I get the sense this is less about McDavid and more that national media is so desperate for a Canadian Stanley Cup win that they are now resorting to the ask for special treatment to players on Canadian teams. It's pretty sad and embarrassing.

The way what Garland did has snowballed is the funniest part.

The entire clip plays out in 14 seconds in real time...including the crosscheck.

But now you see things online that Garland was "literally mauling him", "holding him down for a minute", "trying to hurt his shoulder"...they are just so unhinged at what was a nothing moment that wouldn't even be a discussion if it didn't happen to 97.

Oiler fans should probably be careful about how much they want the NHL to care about the marketability of its stars, or even how much McDavid himself cares about it. For the supposed best player in the game, he never tops jersey sales and only intermittently finds himself in the top ten. Despite their efforts in marketing, players like Bedard, Ovechkin and Pastrnak are much bigger stars in the US (especially those who play in meaningful markets). And you wouldn’t know it if you exclusively followed Sportsnet coverage, but Matthews is a more relevant star in Canada.

If letting McDavid run wild is in the best interest of the NHL, so is heavily encouraging a move to a major market like Toronto, New York, Chicago, or Boston.

It's ridiculous.... I have stated many times, McDavid is not even the best player in the NHL, maybe not even top 5. How this story has been elevated is asinine.
