I think they got way better. They had a rude awakening when they first opened here in Calgary because the Edmonton one was highly spoken of and I don't think they matched it initially. I think they took some heat and had to make a lot of changes to their location and now the last couple times I've been there it was fantastic.

They’re now owned by Recipe Unlimited so they had to start living up to the stellar reputation of restaurants like Swiss Chalet.

Is this the place in Inglewood?

There's also one on SB Edmonton Tr just North of Memorial (204 4 St NE) but I'm not sure if it's open yet.

That one on 17th Ave SW isn't that far west, I get down there sometimes.
Thanks! Will hopefully get to one of them in the next while.

Yeah, I was asking honestly. Personally I was leaning towards no, but also open to being wrong. Looking for a consensus we probably won't get, haha.
Whatever they are, they are yum. I guess not everything has to fit into neat categories.

I walk past it when I go into downtown. I didn't go into the office last week, but the week before it looked like there was still a lot of work to do. I suspect it will open sometime in the spring.

Ah that sucks balls. I believe their MO is to leave ingredients as is at the beginning and then pull the rug on quality slowly, piece by piece. I bet they hit their fries first. Quality fries for Cavendish style bull**** is usually the first thing pulled back at burger chains as the cost savings are so large.
That's part of why I still go to Five Guys despite the price. Love seeing the piles of potato sacks at the entrance and knowing they'll throw a bunch extra into your bag.

I’ve read that throwing the extra fries on top is to give an illusion of added value. It’s a gimmick that works on me. If I went there and got the same number of fries in a larger cup I’d be disappointed. It adds to the experience.

It’s a lot of fries though, I feel. I don’t know if it’s a gimmick.

But look at their prices vs what you get at other fast food restaurants. I'm as cynical as anyone but I paid $4.99 for my small fries and couldn't finish them which literally happens never at any other fast food joint.
Just look at that cup the small fries is in and the amount in the bag. I don't think it's an illusion gimmick so much as a legitimate loss leader to keep people coming back. "They're paying $12 for our burger, load em up with fries and they'll remember that and keep coming back".

It is a gimmick. It’s company policy to do it. It doesn’t mean it isn’t good value for the price but they want you to know it.
Like I said, if they gave you the same amount of fries neatly contained in the cup you would notice and possibly feel shorted.

I agree it is likely a "gimmick" to "display" them that way but it is also literally the most fries for the money and really great quality, fresh cut potatoes fries of any fast food chain.
The word gimmick to me suggests that they are actually shorting you and convincing you you're getting more. Where as they're over portioning relative to the industry. I would say marketing tactic over gimmick, myself.
