Since Calgary is also dumping Kadri's cap hit which goes for 4.5 more years, there is no cost of dumping Mittelstadt's cap hit.

Teams aren't lining up for an aging and overpaid asset. At his age he is going to decline rapidly most likely.
And this isn't me being "eeyore". I have said you can get a lot for a player like Rasmus, at his age. But at Kadri's age and with his contact, that is a tough one to move.
|
He wouldn't have been traded by now, he doesn't want to be traded and has a NMC. I know for a fact teams have kicked tires on Kadri.

At least I can see a world where we keep Rasmus. I can maybe be swayed from trading him. But there is absolutely no way you keep Kadri if someone will take that contract off your hands.
|
You probably keep Kadri because every single team that has done this scorched earth rebuild has either sucked in perpetuity or taken a very very long time to actually be competitive. Best to do a rebuild with good quality veterans on the team lest one be stuck in a perpetual draft party mode where the only thing to look forward to after Christmas is the draft party.

Kadri isn't a dump. He's a guy on pace for another 30 goal season. He might be a dump in 2-4 years, but he certainly isn't one now.
Mittelstadt is on pace for another 15 goal season. He is in the coach's doghouse and for the last game they had to move Rantanen from #1RW to #2C so they can demote Mittelstadt to the third line.
Kadri >>> Mittelstadt.

Yes, the team is immediately worse with Middelstadt in Kadri's spot. This would make team tank very happy but I can't see the Flames entertaining the idea of trading Kadri while in a playoff spot.
Also, if Kadri has no interest in being traded then the whole point is moot... but it was a fun thought exercise.

Once we get some centers in the prospect pool and hopefully a high pick we can look at trading Kadri.

Kadri isn't a dump now... but any team taking him on is very aware of his contract length, and it would be something they consider.

Kadri's contract was terrible, is terrible, and will be an absolutely disaster.
If COL has that deal on the table, take it and run.

Wasn’t Crosby throwing out feelers to Iggy to join Pittsburgh while he was being shopped?
Wonder if Kadri gets a text from MacKinnon that would get him to waive to go to Colorado.

That wouldn’t be surprising at all. Makar too. I think Kadri was well liked in that room, fairly confident in saying they would welcome him back with open arms.
I think that’s why this Middlestat+Ritchie for Kadri rumour is intriguing. Not sure how realistic it is, but if I were Conroy and the Av’s were willing to do it, I would have a hard time saying no.

I don’t think it would matter. If the rumours are true about family and Canada I doubt he is waiving to go down south. Still think the only place he would consider is Toronto. Even then it would probably be a summer time decision.

If that was on the table and Kadri would waive then it would have happened. I don’t think Kadri has that much value

Why would Conroy trade Kadri? I would think he would have to be blown away. He is not trying to lose, he is not trying to tank. He does not have enough NHL centers to start with and does not have any in the system. So he needs quality NHL centers for the next 2-3 years. Getting rid of Kadri significantly increases the likelihood that the Flames are a very bad team over the next 2-3 years, which is not something Conroy is trying to accomplish.
Putting aside Kadri’s complete control over whether he gets moved the only way I see Conroy trading Kadri is if he is absolutely blown away and then he uses some of the picks and prospects he has accumulated to go and find a center to replace what he just lost by trading Kadri. That is the only hockey way I see the Flames making a Kadri trade over the next 2-3 years.

I think it’s all about the fit. Especially in this instance. Kadri’s play, I don’t think, has dropped significantly since they won that cup. They know him on the ice and off it. If you’re the Avalanche, your window is now.
Also take into account, what other c’s are available? Nelson Gourde, others? So it’s all cost benefit, I think. They know what their getting in Kadri, certainly more so than the others.
Now, I can see the Av’s not wanting to include Ritchie, so perhaps it’s Middlestat and a 1st or a couple of other picks. Either way, if I’m Conroy, I’m having that conversation.

Royle9 and dissentowner say teams have kicked tires on Kadri.
Middlestadt and Ritchie is a full blown offer. So I doubt that it exists anywhere other than the minds of certain fans.

Ritchie is a blow away offer and Middlestadt covers the centre position with an age appropriate player. I agree he won’t move him for a 2nd just to get rid of him but Ritchie + Middlestadt would be his trade MO. Zero chance Colorado does it.

That is probably true (that it is just a fan fantasy right now) but that value would be roughly fair imo. Middelstadt on his own has limited value and far less than what Kadri would have. Ritchie might be too much but maybe if the Flames ate a million a year of Kadri’s salary or something it would be even.
Middelstadt would more or less take over the Kuzmenko role for the next two years so the Flames would have to get something else on top of him to move Kadri I would think.

I think 90% of CP trade rumors are a collection of posters that love to dream up trade proposals speaking ideas into existence. Then in the following days and weeks the fan proposal turns to "rumored return" when posters forget or didn't know the original discussion was simply "what do you think we could get from team A? And then we're off to the races.
I still remember following the Markstrom drama last season. Our rumors here had hints of legit info, but over time you could see the rumors morph into "what we want to happen" to the point where many were convinced we were not only getting New Jerseys 10th OV pick but that we should pump the brakes on giving them too much for it along with Markstrom.
