It's not her fault that Ottawa is Alberta's biggest adversary. I'm sure she would rather be doing other things as well.

She is headlining every Cdn news outlet right now. She was the only who didn't sign the retaliatory tariff approach.
You have rightwing media praising her for standing up for Albertans. Ontarians who don't know who she is will when the Lib attack ads come out. The pic of her and the Orange rapist will be front and centre.

She’d love to join the US. Their current government is her dream.

It's not going to be good for Central Canada if they impose unpopular and destructive export tariffs on Alberta oil and Trump smells blood in the water. That's exactly the type of situation in which he thrives. An alienated and angry Alberta, getting pillaged by the evil Central Canada Liberals, with Trump in the background telling Alberta that he will do everything he can to help, etc.

So you think most Albertans will blame Ottawa for something the American president has been publicly campaigning on and will want to separate to join the country that started the trade war in the first place? Sounds like you just want to be an American already.

Rural Alberta might want to become the 51st state. But I doubt Calgary and Edmonton would want that.

This, treating Alberta as a cohesive entity is the first mistake and Smith is not the only one doing it.

Trump wants to buy all of the oil we have, and Ottawa wants to tax it.
I think that's a pretty easy sell to the Alberta public. If Trump is imposing tariffs on Central Canada and wants to leave Alberta alone, it's not going to look good if Ottawa drags Alberta into the fight for no reason.

Bigger or smaller mistake than treating Canada like a cohesive unit?

You are very much overestimating how many people think like you. Trump wants to do what is best for American oil companies. He doesn’t care about Alberta at all.

Any family, tribe, community, country knows when you are faced with an outside threat you drop your internal squabble and join forces to secure your territory.

To continue the hockey analogy, I know who we should put on waivers for the purpose of granting her outright release.

Nobody said he cares. No politician or jurisdiction cares. It's about aligned interests and mutual benefit.
Central Canads cares about Alberta exactly the same amount that Trump does.

Oil Tarrifs are unlikely from Trump. Smith is just doing this so she can take a victory lap on Tuesday claiming she protected Alberta interests when all she did was go for a visit that accomplished nothing.

Sure, but if Ottawa decides to enact retaliatory actions in response to Trump then it is still part of the same trade war. I think it still mostly plays as screw the US outside of the people who already want to join the States.

If Canada wants to retaliate, then they should start with the Ontario auto manufacturing.
