Such an Oiler move. Bring in another soft, 1-dimensional dman when you needed to go out and get a Tanev esque player to play a 200 foot game.

The added bonus here being that he hasn't played in forever and was a liability before double hip surgery.

Staples in full idiotic fancy mode.

Edmonton has become a home to big name signings. The Oilers made such a move in 2022, signing Evander Kane when San Jose had had enough of him, with Kane becoming a key Oilers performer, especially in the playoffs.

Edmonton did it again in 2024, signing up veteran grinder Corey Perry when Chicago was fed up with him, with Perry playing decent two-way hockey for the Oil when healthy. Now there’s Klingberg coming to E-town.
I don't think signing trash that nobody else wants (either trash as a player or trash as a human) isn't the big flex you think it is David.

Meh. If he works great, if not you bury him for no penalty (depending on the bonus requirement).

Sure, but that ignores the fact that cap space is a limited resource.

"John Klingberg had options....he chose Edmonton"

Now say it Robert Stack's voice. Thats the genuine feel.

Or the voice of the guy who does the NHL player safety videos.

I think this is actually a decent signing. Zero risk really, as he can just be hidden in the AHL if he ends up sucking. Small chance that he is good again after ramping back up, and if so, I hope he gets a lot of bonuses.

Seems like a very low risk, low-reward signing to give them depth and some leadership. Oilers D sucks, and Klingberg probably upgrades someone in that lineup. I just doubt that he is going to upgrade someone enough to move the needle enough. I am curious how this ends up and how Klingberg settles in after 10-15 games. If I had to guess, Klingberg will perform like Barrie has for Calgary.

They are already going to have to remove someone from the roster to fit him in. They are at 24/23 roster spots with him.

I'm sure Klingberg thought the same as you. Just didn't file his papers in case someone was desperate.

Yeah and both of those examples are ones where their contracts were cancelled. It's not some big name signing, it's that the teams literally wanted to get rid of those players.

Stupid question, is he eligible for playoffs? I thought there was a rule about Dec 1 or something for a player to be eligible.

Why would they sign him otherwise

I believe the date is the TDL. Except for AHL players who have a minors contract with the same team.

Ah, it's Dec 1 to be eligible for the regular season. TDL to be eligible for playoffs.
