I wonder if he couldn't find the rings, read or had the NFL robberies stories read to him and freaked out lol.

Also how big is that house??

I'm curious what the monetary value of a Stanley cup ring is. I know they try to pack em with bling, but they always just look like more gaudy versions of those terrible Jostens rings the jocks got in high school. Especially being NHL and not the other big sports, I imagine it's not high enough for anyone of serious means like Malkin to try to pull insurance fraud over.

Peter Pocklington's 1990 Stanley cup ring is listed on the the Pawn Stars shop for $71k CAD and he is only an owner and there are some rumors that he had multiple sets made.

A big name player's ring probably has a lot more value. The bigger the name, the rarer the ring is attainable through legal sales. Most championship rings are usually only sold if their original owner needs money. So it is more common to get staff rings or players who had minor/shortened careers.

Also over time the newer rings have more jewels and metal.

Huh, well if that Pocklington ring is a decent comparable, that's considerable more than what I thought they'd bring in.

Pocklington's might be worth more just because it's so unusual, or maybe he added more diamonds to his own (being the doofus he was). But them listing it at $71K means they paid substantially less (and in a legit market, not under the table).

I see that a 2002 Wings ring costs $7500, and an 04 Lighting ring is only worth $5K (probably because it's tainted).

But the Pens Ring was pretty diamond encrusted:

Because they don't actually belong to anyone of importance.

The 2002 ring was a sample ring sent to the Red Wings for approval on the design

The 04 ring is a staffer ring.

If you got Datsyuk's ring or Lecavailier's ring the price is a lot more.

Sure, except a seller can't go through legit sources so there'd be a huge fencing deduction.

Henri Richard's ring was not worth that much (of course it was a different quality).

Well the discussion isn't about fencing a ring. It is about what their value would be for insurance purposes.

I missed that - I thought we were still on the stolen goods market.

Having a tough time buying the insurance fraud angle - career earnings of about $150M and these rings might be insured for a few hundred K at most.

More plausible explanation (and one I can relate to): forgot where he put the rings, gets robbed, looks (in the wrong place) for rings, not there, reports them stolen, finds them where he (forgetfully) stored them.

Agreed, this sounds way more plausible. Those rings have more sentimental value than monetary value by comparison IMO. There's a lot more higher end stuff you should be claiming if you wanted to do insurance fraud. Heck, his kid could have been playing with it and just lost it in the couch cushions.
