Did not expect to see this from Ovy at this age. 33 points in 29 games at age 39 is very impressive. The Caps are also first in the league.
PLD is having a resurgence (somehow). Thompson looks like a Vezina candidate. Who is Aliaksei Protas?
Would really like to see Washington go on a strong playoff run. Fun team to watch.

Gretzky's points record is impressive and will never be beat, but what Ovy is doing with the goals is beats out Gretzky's goal records hands down.

He'll easily do that next season.
...nevermind. I knew Gretzky's record is 894 but I was picturing in my head 984.

It'd be crazy if Ovi somehow breaks the record this year, and goes on to win the cup. Would that be the ultimate high to retire on?
Based on his production, I don't think he'd retire this season though. Guy is a machine.

Ovy seems to genuinely enjoy playing hockey. After seeing the way he played in his first few season in combination with his love for partying, I'm shocked that his body is holding up the way it is. His skating slowed down from his first few years for sure, but them seemed to plateau and he doesn't look like he's totally slowing down.
I always thought he'd go back to Russia for a few victory laps. With everything going on there now, I don't see that happening.
I could see Ovy sticking around and pushing for 1000 goals. If he's putting up 30+ goal season post-40, that'll make his records impossible to beat....I guess until we develop some kind of anti-aging tech.

I don't think Ovi wants to just break the record by like a few goals. I think he wants to blow Gretzky's record out of the water. Again, I think he wants to aim for 1,000 goals and I believe he is capable to do so if he is going to play for like 3 or 4 seasons after this.

Despite the lockouts and Covid screwing him out of a couple seasons, Ovi has also been blessed with being healthy for most of his career. I can't recall him missing more games than he's missed this season. So for another player to even come close to his record is going to be tough.

He still has another year on his contract; it would be pretty hard for most guys to walk away from 9.5 million USD.
If he has another monster year in his final contract year and ends up at maybe 940ish goals, he might ask for another 1-2 year deal to get the unthinkable 1,000 goals.

Matthews was probably the current player that had the best chance if he could be healthy, but a 12 years older Ovechkin is out scoring Matthews 21to 17 this season playing in a couple less games.

So if he's not potting empty netters he's scoring bush league goals in 3 on 3 OT
Record will be tarnished

As long as the team is willing to keep him on the roster, Ovie should definitely push for more. Why not? Try for 1000 - that would be something. Ronaldo is sticking around to hit that mark, and it would be crazy if in our lifetimes we see both sports hit the 1000 mark.

So impressed by him, love that he’s doing this. Just doesn’t bother me at all, cheering for him completely.

It isn’t a blessing. It’s a skill.
Avoiding injury doesn’t happen by accident.
