I suspect they got a bunch for free, or from a liquidation outlet so they could keep their “1 in 10 chances to win” number accurate. “This guys been buying for 10 years. Should we give him a Pez dispenser or a Zune?” Wish I won some Pez.

Then you'd get the Diabeetus and the Hospital would be spending more than they got from you!
Sucker's deal!

I’d guess that realtors circle those homes like buzzards on a #### wagon when they find out who won the home. There must be a high % of people who opt to sell the home within the first 2 years of ownership I’d imagine based on property taxes, maintenance and utilities.
Hell I know from looking at property taxes alone on previous lottery homes that it is quite expensive to simply own a home with that value. I know that I would be perfectly happy settling for a home a few million dollars cheaper and having the rest in my pocket.

Won a $20k side prize from a home lotto one time.
Split 50/50 with my wife's parents. Then split the $10k between my wife and I. Put mine towards paying HELOC, wife spent it on frivolous crap.
Funny thing was, I was at work and knew the draw was happening that day. Then I started getting messages from friends "OMG!" And "wow congrats dude!"
Thought we had won the ####ing house at first.
It was weird being disappointed with winning $20k lol.
Well....$5k in the end.

If you sold the home for less than the initial value would you be able to claim a loss? Even if the home was worth 2 million and you sold it for two million, the realtors, lawyers and other professionals are taking a slice, so you would still have a loss to declare. Or am I out to lunch and you pay capital gains on any appreciation, but if you have a loss, well too bad for you.

Cap losses can only be applied against cap gains. Maybe different rules for RE but I doubt it.

My wife won $2500 in one. Envelope shows up and was on the counter for two weeks. We thought it was more promo stuff trying to sell it. Like it was almost a straight to the recylcle bin. Opened it up and there's a notification letter and a cheque. So always check what's in it. My mom won a juicer in one last year. Wife also won some type of wireless ear buds.

You'd think one would notice a Juicer in an envelope.

How about that! I guess it was called a Sony Walkman MP3 player? All I remember is we were already an iTunes house, with my wife having an iPod Nano or something of that era, and you had to use Sonys desktop app to drag songs from the explorer window / iTunes folders, and it only worked for half the songs. 2nd time I tried to update it, it just wasn’t worth it and I bought my own iPod.
