My Brother's best friend won a luxury condo in Canmore a while ago. First time I can honestly say I knew a human being who has won any sort of grand prize in any lottery.

Her and her partner ended up selling it in a separation and split the profits.

Friend's family won the Foothills hospital home back when I was in grade 7. It was in Edgemont.

My wife's mother won $1 million many many years ago.

Edit: I think it was the early bird draw or something? I'm not sure if it was Foothills home lotto or something similar.

LOL good memory. He lived on my parent's street in Chaparral and was gone from that spot so fast there was a Roger shaped cloud of dust where he once stood.

A friend of my cousin won a 100k car once, he sold it.

First time I ever bought it back 20 years ago, I won a mixer, and thought, wow, it's so easy to win at least something, I'm gonna buy it every year. Haven't won anything since.

I know two people at work over the last 20 years that won though. One guy won the 50/50 draw, and won $900K. Another guy won a car. Other than that, I don't know anyone else who's won anything.

Wow, he won the one in Royal Oak way back in 2001.

Waiting until they raffle off a hospital. Then I'll buy a ticket.

My folks won a truck 20+ years ago, they sold it almost right away. My memory is it was a fairly stripper model Chevy Colorado.

Interesting thing I learned about the hospital lotteries, AHS employees can buy tickets on payroll deduction. 4 payments of $25 or whatever. And those sales are done before the general on sale date, so when the 50/50 is at a million on the first day a lot of that is health care workers.

My wife buys the tickets all the time because who notices $25 a cheque? I think we've won some camping gear and a DVD player.

One friend basically becomes a millionaire, another wins a very nice car and you can mix ingredients in a bowl. Damn.

My coworker's neighbors won the hospital lottery home last year. Older couple that I believe actually moved into it and didn't sell it.

Good to see. Last year's home was very nice.

I won a Go-Pro knockoff one year and a gift card for camping gear another year. Like any lotto I know I'll almost certainly come out behind, really I view it more as a charity donation except for a few months I get to dream about what I'd do if I won the house.

Feels like (based on this thread) you've been getting screwed.

Probably time for you to double the number of tickets you buy.

Was that the home that had a stupid putting green in the basement in a room that was otherwise unuseable?

You want to move in for a year and then sell it so that you don’t pay taxes.

Maybe but my coworker seemed to think they were staying in it long term.

Could you rent it out for the year? Or do you have to physically live there to make it count as your permanent residence?

Asking for when I never win it.

I mean, you always hear that but lottery winnings in Canada aren't taxable - so shouldn't your adjusted cost basis on the new house be its fair market value at the time you win it?

Edited to add: my uncle buys the biggest package on all those lotteries. They won an SUV once about 10-15 years ago but I wouldnt be surprised if they're still behind overall
