My definition of tanking is isn't that it necessarily has to be deliberate. In fact, I think most of the time even against the best efforts of a GM, it just happens.
Then it's a question of what you do once you come to the realization that the team is in the tank. Do you take the patient approach and lean into it for a few seasons to take advantage of getting high draft picks, or do you immediately start retooling to get out of the basement as quickly as possible.
I think it's kind of a moot point with the Flames now anyway. Unless Wolf burns out or they play him less, he is likely going to provide good enough goaltending to prevent the team from tanking, so there is nothing to lean into in that regard anymore.

Maybe I'm on my own but I don't view Rasmus as a #1 at all.
He's a really good 2/3 guy, but not one a #1.
Over last 3 years he's 0.52 pts/gp (38th among Dman with over 40gp on this period) and a -14.
He's decent both ways but he's not an elite defender or offensive guy.
He doesn't really have any specific elite skills.
He's never really solidified himself as our bonafide pp1 guy

Obviously, no exceptions is a hard line, and trust your performance coaches and analytics that certain players will age and their skillsets will develop well, but I've never been a believer in attaching big term to 3rd line type players. The upside just isn't there.

I don’t know, I’d argue the value is pretty high with the bottom six types because the contracts can be had for way better value. Imagine Coleman for 8 years at 2.5 or 3 instead of 4 at 1.8 and then another 6 at 4.9.
Obviously, it takes a player that values security over maximizing salary and confidence in scouting and player development that there’s something there long term. I agree that the risk is a lot higher for guys in that 28-30 range because you’re buying cheaper prime years at the cost of heavier twilight years, but I think max term for 25/26 mid-lineup guys can payoff huge.

His CF has also taken a dive the last 3 years along with a negative xGF differential.
He is our best trade chip, but he is overrated by our fanbase calling him a top pairing guy. Seems like he is struggling without Hanifin like Brodie did without Gio.

There are 64 top pair Dmen in the league. Even the post you quote has him ranked 38th. He may not be a #1 but to say he's not a top pair defender is simply personal bias

He is a top pairing dman but isn't a #1 dman. Same with Weegar IMO. If he was an actual #1 then the Flames wouldn't consider trading him at all.

Small update:
Calgary still circling on the Cozens front, I'd say they are probably the closest to his situation and continue to monitor that situation very closely.

No exact details, but a 1st ++ likely a prospect + roster player.

FLA - Samoskevich + Eriksson/Devine + 1st
Jack Devine would be a very interesting target. A former 7th rounder that's absolutely tearing the NCAA.
Linus Eriksson is a C, taken in the 2nd round in the last draft, more of a 2-way forward. I could see him being a Backlund replacement in a 3-5 years.
Other teams that could really use Andersson IMO: COL(Calum Ritchie), BOS(Poitras + futures), DET(Wallinder/Edvinsson/Sandin-Pelika/Kasper/Danielson).

I could see Detroit being on Andersson's NT list, but not the other two.

Both LeBrun and Seravalli have mentioned the Flames as among the teams checking in on Cozens in recent days.
Feels like Conroy might get his guy

I could see it being njd 1st + pospisil + something smaller.
Hes the one player that I could see the flames thinking is expendable and doesnt have trade protection that the sabres would be very interested in.
Unless they're willing to move rasmus

I wouldn't give any one of those for that contract.
