I know that, but there's still like the "real"franchise of Chicago deep dish and then terrible franchises also called some variation of Chicago deep dish.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, not looking for genuine authentic deep dish, just the best of the "Chicago deep dish" neighborhood take out places

I think you want the one whose number is 531-31-31, whichever one that is.

Windy City Pizza in Okotoks was selling Chicago Deep Dish. That's the last one that I know of, and it looks like they just closed:

Aw crap! Windy City was awesome.

But yes, if it's the thick calgary style 'deep' dish you're looking for, https://www.chicagodeepdishpizza.com/ is the real one (531-3131) The rest are copycats

The picture does not look like real deep dish.

For which restaurant?

Windy City was real deep dish

The "Chicago deep dish" I linked is not, but it's what jayswin was looking for

Starlite was pretty good. Kids liked it.

Curiousity quenched, anchovies on pizza was surprisingly OK.

I gotta go back there and see if people that I know are still there.

I also need that Lasagna hooked into my veins.

I'm kind of glad you went, its also a nice, old, local place to support.

They've always been super nice people there. Granted I dont think they've updated the furnishings since 1963, but thats neither here nor there.

And you can go to Polcan next door if one is so inclined.

I gotta say, I've always enjoyed 'Johnson Administration' era furnishings and style.

Its quaint and homey. Like Apple pie should be on the window-sill.

Yeah, Windy was authentic. Chicago DD is just a square pizza.

I was into it for a while. The anchovies are very salty. The salt with a bit of a fish oil are the only things you really taste.

I got this recommendation from CP a while ago and I'll repost it as it's incredible pizza, imo. Very low key location and shop (near Flint road and center street near the Tesla dealership). The guy that runs it is pretty young and really passionate about making good pizza and customer serrvice. Would really like to see him keep going.

How's Rio Pizza these days? Is it still around? Used to order from their Temple location when I was a kid.

Yeah, it still looks like a time capsule in 1963 and I noticed a lot of people showing up who looked like they'd been patrons since 1963. It was kinda nice, like a throwback to the days growing up in a small town and including the random convos from the servers. Lots of plexiglass still up. I assume it's from the pandemic days and they didn't bother to pull it down.

Food was quite tasty, but not pretty like something instagrammers would love. It's intended to be enjoyed as a pizza, not a Picasso. It reminds me of the pizza places I used to go to for a lunch time treat in high school, all the way down to the damn pepper flakes being slightly too big for the shaker.

The Shirley Temple was tasty, but too sweet. Same price as a soft drink ($4), but definitely I felt like it was more enjoyable diluting it 1:1 (which we did by pouring it into our water glasses). For that price, it's great value.

It's a 30-35 minute drive for me to get there so I won't be going too frequently. But if the stars aligned (pardon the pun), I'd consider grabbing a quick meal from there more often if I'm in that area.

After so many years I am finding myself not liking pizza. It was glorious forever. I loved all of it, even the crappy stuff. The old Pizza Hut buffet, supreme, triple crown. The higher end stuff like Savino, UNA, Stromboli’s (remember that). Greek loaf pizza like Spiros or Volos or Demetris. Michaels, Gus’. A Pizza Plus hammered. Hell pizza 73 in a pinch. Oakridge pizza. Cornhole Connie and Johns. Barcelona the list underrated pizza in the land. He’ll even crappy Panago at work functions I could rifle in a few.

I did Italian riviera a bunch of years ago and the pizza was simple and cheap and unreal. Is there anything like that. A little crisp to the dough, not heavy or oily. Anything.

I'm still not sure what you started disliking about pizza that you're trying to replicate. Have you tried the Pizza at Lina's Trattoria or Lina's Deerfoot and have an idea if you like/dislike the Margherita pizza there and why?

I'm honestly curious if in your later years you've just become picky about the tomato sauce used on pizza, or if it's something totally different.

Ugh. Le sigh. We are the Old.

Nope. You are unfortunately incorrect.

Most of that was erected upon the advent of segregated sections for smoking and non-smoking and to separate casual diners from the VLTs.

Yup. It is genuinely that old.

I grabbed a mushroom pizza from Lina's in Inglewood the other day. It was great and just what fotze is looking for.

Pizza Culture. Best crust I've had in Calgary.
