I've been a member of a few gyms now in town (Lindsay Park, Goodlife, GYMVMT, MRU) and I gotta say, I haven't seen this communal shower situation at any of them. They all have the individual stalls with curtains. I mean, quite a few just leave the curtain open, but you always have the privacy option. I didn't know some gyms still had the prison style shower setup.

Pre-reno, LPSC had an open communal shower layout. U of C did as well, no idea if they still do.

My Gym has 2 neutral bathrooms (its a small Gym) and each has a shower.

Just dont be a jerkface. Get in there, get clean and get it done. But I usually just go home.

However, I did feel compelled to offer you a 'Thanks' for 'Prison-style shower setup' and all I could think of was that scene from The Rock where they break in through Alcatraz's shower room.

I dont know why, it just is what it is.

I don't have an issue with that out there, but here, it's gets a little weird at times. It's not a nudity issue, it's how people lounge around in the change area here and posture themselves.

IIRC, people go in and out of change areas for saunas and onsen in Asia and Europe, they don't hang out and do weird postures in the change areas. They certainly might chat and hang out in the bathing area, but they don't spend time in the changing area in the same way some people do here in North America.

Usually it was facilities like City of Calgary locker rooms or YMCA with swimming pools. I found gyms were usually pretty good for not having the weird lounge in locker room mentality with the towel off.

I haven't really noted these scenarios as much in the last few years since kids and the usage family locker rooms. A lot of renovations in quit a few places in the last few years have also helped to reduce this with the family locker rooms and the closed door change room option.

Great flick. I'm still bummed on my one trip to Alcatraz they had the outside perimeter closed off: we wanted to run around there like the big ending in The Rock.

Neutral bathrooms; I'm guessing you're at the Y. Yeah I'd feel a bit weird showering in a neutral change room (unless I had to). Or to wash off my wounds from the surf simulator.

I’ve showered after hockey at the rink for 30+ years. Who wants to sit beside the smelly guy at the pub after? Get good shower shoes, wash them often.

It's a lot of #### to carry around to shower at the gym. Body wash, body buffer, shampoo conditioner, face wash, lotion, moisturizer, deodrant, and ass moisturizer.

I did that, it was a blast.

No I'm not at the Y. I should clarify, its a small Gym, so maybe 'Neutral' wasnt the right term, but its private. You go in, you lock the door, you shower and change, just dont take all day because theres only two of them!

So now its Locke's story time! Gather 'round children!

When my wife and I went to Alcatraz we got there and some jerkface knocked this older woman over while getting off the boat because he was an impatient ass, so, I helped the woman up and just started chatting with her.

She asked if we were there for the Tour and we told her that we were and she thanked me for helping her up and asked if she could go on the tour with us. I mean...why not? So we said sure.

If you've ever taken the Alcatraz tour its an audio tour, they give you the headphones and you sort of follow the path, it was so super cool, its an amazing place to visit!

So she tells us: "Leave one of the headphones for the audio tour off and I'll tell you other things."

And then at one point one point when the tour was over she told us to follow her and she was going to show us around places where most people aren't allowed to go.

That was "okay...what is going on here?"

Turns out...she was there on a book tour. She was delivering a speech to promote her book about growing up on Alcatraz. She was the daughter of the last Warden and grew up in Alcatraz.

So. We got a personal tour, we got to see normally unseen things, we got to attend her speech and she gave us a signed copy of her book.

And all of that? Only happened because my wife and I screwed up, had no idea that you really need to get Alcatraz tickets WAY in advance, the only reason we were saved?

We were drinking in a local bar the night before and this young guy realized he forgot all of his money, it was just a beer and I told him not to worry about it and asked the server to just put it on my tab. Turns out we ran into him the next day. That guy worked at our Hotel. We asked him about Alcatraz tickets and he was pretty honest.

"You've got to get those weeks in advance."

But somehow he managed to get us some.

And now you know...the rest of the story.

And he saved our asses getting us a cab to the airport because we'd never heard of the 'Bay to Breakers marathon' and had no idea it was going to be an issue. Solid dude that guy!

Like clockwork every winter they estimate me low one month, typically when prices are low. Then the next month (when prices are inevitably higher cause we're in the dead of winter now) is a huge bill when they read the meter and surprise, my usage has skyrocketed as they catch up to the low estimate. They've done it three years running now.

If it's a pattern, you can call in your power reads, though they are all being automated anyway, so may not be an issue soon. Gas is still manual, I think.
