Yet another warning sign of fascism.
In COVID, our institutions had many many self inflicted wounds upon their credibility.

Carney an outsider? The guy that Trudeau hired as a Special Advisor and Chair of a Leader's Task Force on Economic Growth? Who said this at his new job announcement?

“Canada’s Liberals have achieved real progress for all Canadians. With a winning growth plan, we can build the strongest economy in the G7 and an even better future for all.”

The guy that Trudeau gave the Finance Minister job to? That Trudeau publicly backstabbed his own Deputy Prime Minster in order to promote into Cabinet and was the final straw that finally forced Freeland to backstab him first?

Nevermind how easy it is to tie him to the Liberal Carbon Tax. I think Canadians will be able to see through any claims that's he's any kind of "outsider", probably just hurt his chances as the notion would be an insult to their intelligence. Maybe only in that he has multiple citizenships.

Not sure if that’s an excuse for fascist rhetoric, but I bet it seems like that to some people.

You’re the same person that wanted to kill people who weren’t vaccinated, so I’m not sure you’re the appropriate person to comment here.

An institution's first priority should be to establish and maintain its credibility.

The instinct to manage undesirable speech, even with good intentions, is a trap with an endpoint that results in damaging the institution's credibility. This was repeated endlessly in COVID.

Yes, who would dare insult the intelligence of anyone who thinks Carney is the Finance Minister and that Trudeau promoted him into cabinet?

What if that undesirable speech harms the institution's credibility - which as you say, is the institution's first priority?

Okay - Conservatives and PP supporters should be thrilled that Carney is running then.
Glad we all agree.

Tell that to early 1930's Germany; I'm sure the government would be totally okay damaging their 'institutional credibility' a bit and in order to manage that 'undesirable speech' a little differently.

Honestly most of what Peter tried to slam Carney for made him more and more appealing to me. And then discovering Peter is a proud member of club idiot put everything into focus. Thanks for the article.

Attacks and distrust of experts and scientists is definitely not new but it has shifted from left to right. Some 30 to 40 years ago it was the academic left and progressives who were attacking science and now it is right wing conservatives.

He’s not an outsider in the eyes of the swivel-eyed conspiracists who believe the WEF, global finance, the UN, the Liberal Party, Bill Gates, China, climate scientists, and public health authorities are all part of a vast global conspiracy to crush the freedoms of average Canadians and impose a new world order of authoritarian Marxism.

While only around 10-15 per cent of Canadians fall into that paranoid camp, they’re the beating heart of the populist right in this country today (I don’t use the term ‘conservative’ because there’s nothing conservative about them). They’ll come out guns blazing for Carney (the Epoch Times and True North are no doubt working overtime crafting sinister narratives as we speak). It remains to be seen how more moderate conservatives and undecideds will respond to that tack.

The best thing about science is that no matter how much people (re: right wingers) cry about it and try to attack it and deny it... it still exists, does its thing, and doesn't give a #### what deniers think.

The Cons could break out their old campaigns like "Joly's Not Ready, Nice Hair Though"

So far he is seeming like someone who understands that we work in a capitalist society and how market money works, but who also tempers that with the idea that it is human values that should define us. I don't know how better to define a centrist economist - but I am leaving that open until I learn more.
I would say that my understanding is that he is someone who believes in the markets ability to efficiently accomplish goals so if you incentivize the market correctly it can deliver outcomes in the best interest of society.

The scientific community, academia, and the institution of academic journals have been completely ravaged by the left agenda over the last 10 years or more.

Can't think of a single example of an individual saying things that an institution feels caused harm to the institution's credibility, which as you say, is the #1 priority for those institutions?
